Recurrence of gastric carcinoma not infrequently develops after the curative gastric resection.And the prognosis of the recurred gastric carcinoma is dismal inspite of considerable recent progress in the treatment. We reviewed the clinicopathological characteristics, recurrence pattern and survival rate of 111 recurred gastric carcinoma cases operated in Dept. of Surgery, Yonsei Univ. College of Medicine from January 1987 to December 1992. The significant factors related to recurred site were depth of invasion(p=0.05) and tumor size(p=0.05). Time interval to recurrence were closely related to depth of invasion(p=0.0144), number of involved lymph nodes(p=0.0194) and TNM stage of primary carcinoma(p=0.028).The mean time of overall survival was 28.3 months and it was influenced by the number of involved lymph node significantly(p=0.0193). We concluded that the mode of adjuvant therapy should be individualized according to the status and severity of the primary disease to improve survival and quality of life.
