We reviewed 62 cases of parotid tumor treatment at the Department of Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital over a period of 5 years from Jan. 1, 1981 to Dec. 31, 1985(late 5 years). We compaired this result with the clinical study of 26 cases of parotid tumor who had been treated over a period of 5 years from Jan. 1, 1976 to Dec. 31, 1980(Early 5 years). The results were as follows. 1) The sexual ratio was 1.2 : 1 male predominant in early 5 years, but in late 5 years it was reversed to 1.4 : 1 female predominant. If malignant cases are considered only, in the both period was predominant 3.5: 1. 2) The chief complaint was a painless mass in all the cases and facial nerve palsy was accompanied with one third of malignant cases. 3) The median size of mass was 3.5 cm in both period. 4) In benign cases, superficial lobectomy was performed in 6 cases(35%) in Early 5 years. In late 5 years, superficial lobectomy(34 cases), superificial lobectomy with partial excision of deep lobe(2 cases) and total parotidectomy(8 cases) were performed, so 81% of all benign tumors of late 5 years were treated with superficial lobectomy or more extensive operation. 5) According to the report of histopathological findings of 26 cases in early 5 years, benign tumor was 65%(n =17) and malignant tumor was 35%(n =9). But in late 5 years, benign tumor was 85% (n=53) and malignant tumor was 15% (n=9). In benign cases, mixed tumor was 88% (n=15) in early 5 years, and 90% (n=48) in late 5 years. 6) In the 7 recurrent cases, previous operation was enucleation in all cases. 7) Post-operative complications occurred 24% in early 5 years and 35% in late 5 years. The difference may be due to more aggressive surgery in late 5 years. 8) There was no evidence of recurrence in 37 benign follow-up cases.
