Eelectrogastrogram (EGG) was conducted to determine EGG pattern in normal subjects and to expore pre- and postprandial EGG variation. Twenty medical students volunteered for the study and all volunteers were in goad health and with no gastrointestinal symptoms. Prior to the consumption of the standard meal (three commercially available toast and 100ml of milk), two of 10 minute preprandial recordings were made, After eating, three of 10 minute postprandial recordings were also collected. This study showed; 1) Bipolar recordings were somewhat more cleaner than monopolar recordings. 2) Occasionally preprandial EGG recordings failed to show any obvious 3cpm activity. 3) The respiration artifact could be reduced by setting high frequency filter on 0.08Hz. 4) The average EGG amplitude and the frequency during the preprandial period were 13.11 (±3.42)uV, 2.8 (±0.16) cpm respectively, 5) Postprandial EGG recordings yielded more cleaner signals than preprandial recordings, During the first 10 minute after eating, the EGG amplitude was 27,06 (±4.14)uV and the frequency, 2,22(±0.13)cpm. The average EGG amplitude decreased to 20.46(±3.20)uV and the average frequency increased to 2.78(±0.20)cpm during 30 minute postprandially. In conclusion, follwing the consumption of a meal, the average EGG amplitude increases and the average frequency decreases. After 30 minute postprandially, EGG patterns return to preprandial pattern. It is not possible, however, to find a postprandial EGG variation above which gastric contractions are always present. EGG recording should be done pre- and postprandially.
