The irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common problem in gastroenterological practice, but there have been few satisfactory data about the relationship between the symptom and personality.
So we analyzed 151 IBS and 38 functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID) patients through the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). In this analysis there were no differences between IBS and FGID on MMPI scales. IBS patients who had suffered from abdominal pain showed the personality that tended to be more selfish, immature, and somatic. And those who had suffered from alternative bowel habit change showed the personality that were more hysteric and somatic.
In conclusion, these results suggest that there need to have a more sincere psychological interest in IBS patients with adominal pain or/and alternative bowel habit change.
