Gastric varices are being seen increasingly often in the patient presenting acute gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Unlike esophageal varices, the prevalence of gastric varices is unknown but it seems they are uncommon and there is no detailed report about the endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS). Therefore, to evaluate the efficacy of EIS on gastric varix and influencing factors of EIS, we conducted a retrospective study of 41 patients with gastric varices from June, 1986 to March, 1989 at Haewha Hospital, Medical Center, Korea University. Gastric varices were incompletely eradicated in 9 cases 21.9%, completely eradicated in 28 cases 68.3%. Gastric varices bleeding were not controlled in 4 cases 9.8%. Influencing factors on EIS include injection approach, varix size, patient's condition (p<0.05), mucosal change (p<0.001). Complications were in order, fever 24 cases 49.1%, chest pain 7 cases 14.3%, ulcer on injection site 6 cases 12.2%, epigastric pain 6 cases 12.2%.
