Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the influencing factors on blood pressure in non-diabetic adults. It is well known that there are many influencing factors on blood pressure such as age, sex, obesity, activity, drug, and pregnancy. Recent data showed that the hypertension is also associated with hyperinsulinemia. Method: In this study, the relationship bwtween blood pressure and age, anthropometric data(body mass index, waist hip ratio), fasting serum glucose and insulin, and lipid profiles was evaluated in 314 non-diabetic adults. Result: l) In men(n=166, mean age 44+9 years, mean body mass index 23.1+2.6 kg/m), systolic blood pressure had positive correlations with basal insulin, body mass index, basal glucose, and waist hip ratio. The diastolic blood pressure were also positively associated with basal insulin, waist hip ratio, age, and body mass index. In stepwise multiple regression analysis, fasting serum insulin and glucose were independent predictors of systolic blood pressure, while serum insulin, waist hip ratio, and age were independent predictors of diastolic blood pressure. 2) In women(n=148, mean age 45+10 years, mean body mass index 22.8+3.l kg/m), systolic blood pressure had positive correlations with basal insulin, body mass index, triglyceride, and total cholesterol. The diastolic blood pressure also had positive correlation with basal insulin, triglyceride, waist hip ratio, and age. In stepwise multiple regression analysis, serum insulin, triglyceride, and body mass index were independent predictors of systolic blood pressure, while serum insulin and age were independent predictors of diastolic blood pressure. After adjustment of age, body mass index, lipid levels, and waist hip ratio, the blood pressures of hyperinsulinemic subjects were significantly higher than those of hypoinsulinemic ones(p<0.0l). Conclusion: These results suggest that serum basal insulin is associated with blood pressure in non-diabetic adults.
