Background: Celiprolol is known to be a 0-adrenergic blocker with pl, a2-bloeking and $2-agonizing activity, therefore differs from other p-blackers with metabolic and hemodynamic properties. We studie4 the antihyper- tensive effieacy and the effect on lipid profile, blood glucose concentration and side effects of celiprolol in diabetic patients with essential hypertension. Met%ode: 22 hypertensive patieots with type Il diabetes mellitus were included, 5 patients were male and the other 17 patients were female. One female patient was lost during follqw-up period and one female patient was excluded due to severe gastrointestinal disturbance. Celiprolol 200 mg was administered once daily, then dosage was increased upto 400 mg if diastolic blood pressure, checked after two weeks of celiprolol shorved above 95mrnHg, Results: The blood pressure and heart rate decreased frvm 167.0/100.8 mmHg, 82.1/min to 155.0/94.3 mmHg, 75.0/min at the end of treatment, respectively (p<0.05). Total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholestero1, triglyceride were changed from 204.4 mg/dl, 125.9 mg/dl, 44.0 tagf dl and 172.5 mgfdl to 207.8 mg/dl, 124.0 mg/ dl, 46.6 mg/dl and 182.2 mg/dl, respectively, but without statistical significance. Bluod glueuse concentration algo showed no significant change. During the periad of the study, a few side effects were noted such as gastro- intestinal Distubasnce and rmld headache, (:onclasion: A new p blocker, celiprolol showed sig- nificant antihypertensive efficacy in the trvtment of e,ntial hypertension with type ll diabetic patients witbogt harmful effect on lipid profiles, aod the effect on glucose metabolism seems to need further investigation,
