KYPHOSCOLIOSIS, or "hunch-back", was recognised at the time of Hippocrates, and it was he who classified the abnormal spinal curvatures into kyphosis, scoliosis, and lordosis. Hippocrates also recognised the association between chest deformities and cardiorespiratory failure when he wrote "such persons as become hump-backed before puberty from asthma of cough, die." Various conditions have been reported to be the cause of kyphosis including tuberculosis, trauma, poliomyelitis, congenital abnormalities, rickets and osteomalacia. In these cases, obstetric importance of different according to the level of kyphosis in abnormal fetal presentation, prematurity from fetal aspect and anemia, preeclampsia, cardiopulmonary failure, uterine inertia, dystocia and circulatory failure from the maternal aspect. Occasionally, especially at labor and postpartal state, the circulatory failure may drive the patient to death. Generally it is recommended to perform the contraception and therapeutic abortion in earlier pregnancy and needed the precise antepartal fetal monitoring and evaluation of the cardiopulmonary function at later pregnant state. At labor they should expect the possibility of the vaginal delivery, but in the major cases the Cesarean Section is recommended and at postpartal state, great concerns should be taken to the possibility of the cardiopulmonary failure and the pneumonia. Recently, we experience the 8 cases of pregnant patients with kyphosis, so here we report the cases with the related literatures.
