An anencephalic pregnancy was first diagnosed by measurement of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in maternal serum at 16 weeks After confirmation of the diagnosis by ultrasonography, the pregnancy was terminated at 18 weeks` gestation It was appreciated that maternal serum AFP levels could by use ful in the screening of large numbers of pregnancies for possible central nerwous system malformations
