Contact hysteroscopy is a new endoscopic technique that allows direct examination of the uterine cavity. The image is obtained by the direct application of the end of the apparatus against the uterine mucosa without using gas or liquid media to distend the uterine cavity. We performed outpatient contact hysteroscopy in 56 patients at the Dept. of Obstet. & Gynecol., Seoul National University Hospital from June 1984 to July 1985. Out of 18 cases of metorrrhagia, endometrial hyperplasia(2 cases), endometrial carcinoma(4 cases), submucosal myoma(2 cases), endometrial polyp(1 case), decidua(1 case), endometrial atrophy(1 case) were included and in remaing 7 cases hysteroscopic findings were normal. Uterine synechiae were divided under direct visual control and IUD with nonvisual threads on examination were removed under hysteroscopic control. In 10 cases of unexplained infertility including 4 cases of unsatisfactory hysterosalpingogram 1 case of uterine synechia was confirmed. Fourteen patients including 6 cases with persistent bleeding after delivery or abortion were managed for pregnancy-related problems with hysteroscopic evaluation. There were no complications related directly to hysteroscopic examination. This initial experience show that contack hysteroscopy seems to offer useful diagnostic and therapeutic aid in the various circumstances of gyneology and the pathology of pregnancy.
