The reported incidence of balanced translocations of chromosome in couples with repeated spontaneous abortions ranges from 0% to 31%. We will report on the results of chromosome analyses performed on blood specimens from 28 couples with a history of two or more spontaneous abortions from June, 1981, to June, 1984. No individual had a balanced translocation in a significant propertion of cells. Four minor chromosomal abnormalities were observed in this study, the incidence was 14.3% among couples (7.2% among individuals). Our study is not in agreement with several previous studies that indicated an increased number of balanced chromosomal translocation in couples with repeated spontaneous abortions over that in the general population. The differences in the results can be explained by the degree of stringency in the proband selection and the different populations observed. The relatively high level of chromosomal variant suggest that cytogenetic analysis should be recommended in couples with repeated spontaneous abortions. When clinical analysis fail to clarify the cause.
