We have observed perinatal deaths occurring in Ewha Woman`s Hospital during a 10 year period January 1, 1969 to December 31, 1978. there were 271 stillbirths and 175 neonatal deaths among 18, 117 cases of total deliveries which included fetus weighing over 1000g. The results of the study were as follows; 1. The perinatal mortality rate during the 10 years was 24.6 per 1000 births. 2. The perinatal mortality rate was lowest in the age group 25-29, and the rate was increased after at age of 35 and over. 3. The perinatal mortality rate was increased at the second parity and over. 4. There was about 4 times higher perinatal mortality rate among pregnant women who received no antenatal care than among pregnant women who received some antenatal care. 5. There were increase possibility of life of the babies weighing 1000g over at birth 6. The most common causes of perinatal death were hemorrhage(15.5%) and were followed by malformations (14.6%) unknown(12.8%) prematurity(11.4%) infection(9.9%) hypertensive pregnancy (8.1%) etc. 7. The most frequently encountered single anomaly was anencephaly. 8. The most common neonatal death was prematurity (28%). 9. The congenital syphilis was the most common cause of infection leading to perinatal death. 10. The total number of potentially preventable perinatal death were 39 cases or 2.1 in the rate. Therefore, it has been our provision that our current series of perinatal mortality-24.6 per 1,000 live births canbe reduced to 22.5. 11. The high quality antenatal care and early hospital treatment or delivery were considered to be always important for prevention of perinatal deaths.
