Karim and Sharma(1971) reported the first successful attempts of induction of labor with the use of oral Prostagladin E2. Since then a large number of reports on induction of labor with oral Prostagladin E2 have been described in various medical literatures. A clinical attempt was carried out to delineate the clinical reaction of oral Prostagladin E2 for induction of labor. Induction of labar was performed in the cases of 58 women between the 37th and 43rd weeks of pregnancy who were admitted to the department of OB. and Gyn. of Korea University Hospital, from April 1978 to December 1978. The pelvic score for inducibility was determined by Bishop Scoring method(1964). In this report will be presented success rate, induction to delivery time, dosage requirement, maternal side reactions. and fetal complications. The results were as follows; 1. Sucessful induction was 73.0% in primipara(19 of 26 cases) and 90.6% in multipara(29 of 32 cases). 2. Mean induction-delivery time was 12.3 hours in primipara and 9.5 hours in multipara. Time interval medication to active labor was 97.9 minutes in primipara and 77.6 minutes in multipaca. 3. Mean total dosage of PGE2 was 5.5mg(11 tablets) in primipara, 4.4mg(9 tables) in multipaca. 4. The success rate was 80.4% in the group with intact membrane(37 of 46 cases) and 91.6% in the group with premature rupture of membrane(11 of 12 cases). 5. Successful induction in the group with pelvic score "0∼6" was 79.1%(34 of 43 cases) and 93.3%(14 of 15 cases) in the group with pelvic score "7∼13". 6. Maternal side effats during PGE2 induction were nausea(5.2%), uomiting(1.7%), uterine hypertonus(3.4%), but they disappeared spontaneously without specific management.
