There are various methods to evaluate the course of labor. Calkins described a relationship of labor course with cervical resistance and uterine contraction. Koller and Abt employed a methods which showed the effect of ruptured membraane on cervical dilatatio. In 1954, Friedman devised a new method which would be more suitable to statistical evaluation of course of labor and the Friedman curve was obtained. In oder to evaluate the Friedman curve in Korean women, 90 normal primigravidae nad 102 multigravidae were selected. And two groups of 49 primigravidae and 51 multigravidae were selected in order to evaluate the effect of Algaphan on flrst stage of labor (2-4 cm dilated) and their respective labor curve were drawn. The results are as follows: 1) Labor curve of Korean primigravidae and multigravidae is very similar to Friedman curve respectively. 2) Labor course of multigravidae exhibitsa shorter duration than that of primigravidae in each phase. 3) Cervical dilataion to 5.0 cm, in first stage of labor consumes tow-third of total duration of labor. 4) Algaphan shortens markedly first stage of labor, therefore, total duration of labor in Algaphan groups are much shorter than that in control groups.
