Spherical alumina powders were prepared by the controlled hydrolysis of aluminum alkoxide in a solution consisting of octanol and acetonitrile. The reagent concentration influenced the particle size, size distribution, and morphology. Sub-micormeter-sized alumina particles grew to 5㎛ with increased concentration of hydroxypropylcellulose as a dispersant. Particle size increased when alkoxide concentration is increased and decreased when amount of H₂O is increased. As-prepared amorphous powders crystallized to γ-alumina at 1000℃ and converted to α-alumina at 1150℃. The particle morphology was retained after crystallization α-alumina.
