In this paper I investigate the structures of result predicates, showing the result predicate is not an adjunct but an argument. As the result predicates are considered as arguments, they pose the same problem as the three-place predicates, namely that the resultative verb in each case appears to have two complements, and thus pose a potential problem for a binary-branching framework. So the VP shell analysis proposed by Radford(1997) can be extended to resultatve predicates. In other words, we can overcome this problem if we adopt a light verb analysis of resultatives. But under this analysis one problem about the θ-role arises. In the result predicate structure the post verbal NP is received two different θ-roles each by verb and result predicate, but the NP has one θ-role under the VP shell analysis.
