International trade has always been an engine of growth of the world economy. However, the growth of trade volume in the past several decades has been accompanied by rising trade disputes between Countries. In particular, there has been a notable increase in trade disputes since the establishment of the WTO in 1995. Section Ⅱ of this paper tries to find some stylized facts of trade disputes under the WTO. Not only have there been more trade disputes reported to the WTO annually than those reported to the GATT, but there have also been a couple of changes observed under the WTO in terms of the composition of trade disputes across countries and types of dispute. Section Ⅲ of this paper includes an empirical study, which tries to clarify why a certain country is engaged in more trade disputes than other countries. Having the total number of a country`s trade disputes since the establishment of the WTO as the dependent variable, this empirical study tries to find the factors responsible for causing trade disputes. Section Ⅳ introduces cases that ate related to Korea. It shows Korea`s current trade dispute situation. Also, it tries to explain the Korean situation in light of the findings made in section Ⅲ. Section Ⅴ is the concluding section, which summarizes the findings of this paper.
