사진이 발명된 이후에 인간의 얼굴을 촬영하는데 초상 사진가들이 들인 노력은 사진의 역사 만큼 끊임없이 계속 되어 왔다. 초상(肖像)에 대한 매력은 자신의 변모를 후손에게 전하려는 보존적인 가치와 현실적으로는 자신의 지위를 높이는 의미였으며, 이러한 것이 스스로 자기만족을 영위하는 결과에 귀속되었기 때문이다. 초상사진은 사진 발명이후 수많은 사진가들의 끊임없는 노력으로 눈부신 발전을 계속해 왔다. 카메라 메커니즘의 발전과 감광재료의 발달은 컴퓨터 분야의 힘으로 더욱 급속도로 발전하고 있다. 그러나 현재 발전된 사진촬영용 렌즈의 대부분은 결상에 있어서 좋지 않은 영향을 주는 각종 수차를 가급적 억제하는 것이 일반적이다. 그렇기 때문에 SUR 타입이나, 중형카메라급이나 뷰카메라의 표준렌즈 및 교환렌즈들도 어느 것이나 사용만 정확히 하면 깨끗하고 선명한 화상을 재현하는 데에는 큰 문제가 없다고 본다. 그러나 첨단기술로 만들어진 이 렌즈들도 대개는 렌즈에 따르는 묘사성에 특징이 없고, 깊은 맛이 나지 않는다는 평가도 있다. 그런데 수차가 많은 렌즈는 피사체의 한 점에서 나온 빛이 렌즈를 통과하여 결상하였을 때 한 점에서 초점이 맺히지 않으므로, 그 이미지는 흐려져서 부드러운 모습의 소프트한 이미지가 된다. 특히, 여성의 포트레이트에서는 주름이나 피부의 섬세한 모습까지 선명하게 묘사되어 딱딱한 무드를 만드는 렌즈에 비해 부드러운 묘사를 하는 렌즈를 선호하는 경향이 있다. 이와 같은 목적으로 만들어진 것이 소프트포커스렌즈(SF렌즈)로 연초점 렌즈라 부르고 있다. 현재는 상당한 숫자의 메이커들이 특정 포트레이트 전문가들을 겨냥해 SF렌즈를 발매하고 있다. 간혹 적당한 준 망원 타입의 SF렌즈를 선택할 수 있음에도 불구하고 렌즈 메이커의 자료검토를 충분히 하지 못하여 일반렌즈에다 소프트용 필터를 사용하거나 다른 방법을 사용하는 사진가들도 있다. 물론 사진적인 효과를 볼 때는 일조를 하지만, 그러나 근본적으로 포트레이트용 렌즈로 가능한 한 촬영하는 것이 보다 이상적이라 할 수 있다. 렌즈를 구입할 때에는 메이커에서 발매되는 자료를 충분히 검토하고 포트레이트 촬영에 적합한 렌즈를 사용하여야 한다.

The improvement of "camera mechanism" and materials of photosensitivity makes photographing rapidly continue in progress. However, most of the currently developed lenses have a general tendency to abstain from wide-variety of aberration. Generally, anything like a standard lens or an exchangeable lens of SLR-type and the medium-sized view camera, if applied properly, have no problem at producing a clean and sharp image. Lens that have many wide aberrations makes the features soft because of such out of focus light undoubtedly blurs that feature when it comes from a certain point of object and appears. There is a certain tendency that lenses of soft description are preferable in comparison with lenses of rigid mood which can describe sharply even features of wrinkled skin, especially in womens` portrait photographing. Soft-focus lens is designed to meet this need. Currently, several prominent companies produce the SF lens for the certain group of portrait experts. Although quasi-telephoto lens is available, some photographers use soft-focus filter lens on general or other method due to lack of information on lenses available in the market. It may be useful for photographical effects, but the ideal method is to use portrait lens. For more dignified and beautiful portraits, old-fashioned and not multi-coated lens is preferable to the more recent lenses that have a high degree of sharpness and contrast. For example, non-coated lens such as SONNAR 150㎜ & 250㎜, medium-sized camera lenses of Hasselblad which are not multi-coated are widely used among famous photographers. In the process of photographing, it is quite reasonable to use a variety of lenses that suit its purpose of expression. However, there is a tendency to use fashionable and expensive lenses. Once, the high-grade lens such as 200㎜/F1.8 of Cannon has been widely used for photographers. Some discontinued their use, realizing that it` sefficiency falls short to its price. Nonetheless, certain. Photographers still prefer excessively bright and aspherical lenses. When purchasing camera lens for portrait photos, careful study in lenses available by the manufactures is strongly recommended.
