세계화 연구에서 미국 문화가 다른 나라에 미치는 영향에 대한 해석은 많은 논란을 불러 일으켜 왔다. 문화제국주의 논의에 뿌리를 두고 있는 미국화 논제 (Americanization thesis)는 세계화가 빠르게 전개되면서 결국 미국 문화 자본이 세계 전체를 지배하게 될 것이라고 주장해 왔다. 그러나, 지난 20여년 동안 수많은 사례 연구들은 미국화 논제가 많은 개발도상국가의 현실과 맞지 않음을 지적해 왔다. 본 논문은 지난 90년대에 서울시에서 상영된 영화를 사례로 세계화 논의에 있어 미국화 논제를 비판하고, 서울의 영화 제작자와 관객들이 헐리우드 영화의 성공에 대해 어떻게 대응했는지 살펴보았다. 자유 무역 논리에 따라 정부의 국내 영화사에 대한 지원과 수입제한이 사라지면서, 그리고 1988년 한국정부가 미국 영화사들의 직배를 허용하면서 헐리우드 영화는 상영 편수에서, 그리고 흥행에서 서울의 영화계를 좌우해 왔다. 많은 헐리우드 영화들이 90년대에 서울에서 많은 관객을 동원했지만, 1999년은 4편의 찬국 영화가 박스 오피스 상위 10위권에 속하는 해였다. 이런 영화들의 흥행 성공은 헐리우드 영화가 미국 영화산업만의 소유는 아니라는 미국화 논제를 비판하는 creolization, hybridization. reterritorialization 등의 논의를 뒷받침해 주고 있다. 문화적 세계화는 미국 문화의 세계 지배와 각 나라, 지방의 그에 대한 대응을 같이 연구할 때만이 보다 잘 이해될 수 있다.

There has been a speculation on whether globalization would make different parts of the world look alike. The Americanization thesis on the same line with cultural imperialism has argued that the recent rise of cultural flows at the international scale has accelerated the worldwide replacement of local ages with American one. In contrast, the revisionists have pointed out that local cultures have not been the helpless victims of cultural globalization, instead they have survived through assorted processes of creolization, hybridization and reterritorialization of global, American cultures. This paper examines the excessive success of Hollywood films in Seouls film industry and local filmmakers and viewers reactions to it. The growing monopoly of Hollywood films has not been the whole story of the 1990s Korean movie world. Hollywood films in Seoul illustrate both the growing dominance of American cultural industries over a fragile, unprotected developing market and the remaking process of imported cultures by local consumers and producers. This paper suggests that both sides of this story be heard, rather than either one be overly emphasized in the explanation of cultural globalization.
