Empirical Study to Determine Container Terminal Planning Parameters in the Republic of Korea

Rapid introduction of new technology in sea transport industry, in particularly containerisation as a transport revolution concept, has radically altered ocean transportation, changing trade pattern cargo handling operation, inland transport, freight terminal and commercial practice and customs procedures. Further, containerisation`s greatest impact has been on ports and the way they accommodate container carriers and handle their cargoes in the developing countries. The crucial areas to improve for the smooth adoptation and to achieve transport cost effectiveness of the containerisation are to prepare adequate development plan and strategies of port; to adopt seasible and sound methodology to apply in the plan. However, many developing countries in particular Korea have face many difficulites to cope with for the adoptation of container transport system efficiently. The center of the problems in Korea seaports is the inability of the industry to expand facilities in line with demand. The purpose of this paper is; to observe the development of containerisation; to investigate the potential container flow pattern for the new projected terminal; to set design parameters to be adopted for a sound port development plan; and to guide wider implication of the parameters in the developing countries with particular reference with Republic of Korea.
