Callus was induced from the clove of garlic (Allium sativum) on MS solid medium supplemented with several growth regulating substances. Somaclonal variations from callus cells, and from callus-derived regenerants were examined in the chromosome levels. Among 39 regenerants, somatic chromosome constitution of 31 plants was diploid which was same as cultivar, while that of 7 tetraploid plants which was found to results from exact doubling of the chromosome sets of diploid common cultivar. Variations in callus cells were varied from structural rearrangement of chromosomes to various ploidy levels. Diploid and tetraploid were not discerned in growth rate, leaf form and other external factors, but the bulb of tetraploid didn`t have clove as mono-bulb.
