Polymorphisms of the salivary amylase (AMY 1) and pancreatic amylase (AMY 2) were investigated for 500 unrelated middle school students and 372 healthy blood donors living in Seoul, Korea, using polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. AMY 1 variant was not observed in these samples. However, AMY 2 variant was seen in two urine and serum samples (0.2~0.3%). The frequency of amylase variants was lower than that found in other racial populations.
