Chromosomal inversion polymorphisms of D. melanogaster at Anyang (Korea) have been examined. Samplings of 1,235 wild individuals were done in late August of 1981, 1982 and 1983. The results based on the chromosome analyzed may be summarized as follows. (1) Nineteen different inversions were found from the natural population. Their distribution showed one inversion in X-, five in II-, and thirteen in III-chromosomes. Eight of them proved to be of cosmopolitan polymorphic type, the rest rare endemic. Most of them were single paracentric, except two different overlapping inversions in III-R arms. (2) Homogeneity tests for the frequencies of inversions in II-chromosomes between the year to year samples do not show the significant difference, while these tests in III-chromosomes reveal significant changes. (3) Non-random combinations between the overall inversions of 3L-3R, and 2L-3L were observed. significant year to year changes and the observed non-random associations in inversions might be explained as a further evidence for the balancing natural selection to maintain the chromosomal polymorphisms in this natural population of D. melanogaster.
