현대에 와서 환경에 대한 개념은 그 중요성으로 인해 자연 과학 분야뿐만이 아니라 여러 학문 분야에서 새롭게 해석과 함께 인식 또한 부각되고 있다. 「환경(Environment)」이라는 말은 그 개념의 다양성과 광범위 성으로 인해 그 규정을 한 마디로 요약 서술하기가 용이하지 않을 만큼 복잡하다. 일반적으로 환경이란 광범위하고 다양한 여러 가지 물리적 심리적 만남의 장소 거기에 특성 지어지는 하나의 작용력을 의미하게 되는데 현대 미술에 적용되는 환경개념을 둘로 한정시켜 구분한다면, 건축 또는 도시계획 적인 환경과 예술적 환경으로 구분 될 수 있다. 예술적 환경개념이란 환경을 이미지 창조하고 하는 하나의 공간개념으로 파악하려는 현상을 의미하게 되는바 2차원에서 3차원으로 차원의 연장에 따른 전개효과의 변형이라고 한다. 이렇게 환경 그것이 지닌 아주 광범위한 종국개념 속에서 환경 내부에 대한 예술적 창조가 가능해 지며, 그래서 하나의 공간은 그 자신으로서의 리얼리티를 지니게 되고 이것이 예술적 이미지를 탄생시킨다고 보고 있다. 여기에서 환경예술의 형성은 종래의 기존 예술과는 달리 일시성, 익명성, 개방성, 사회성, 유희성을 덧붙여 예술의 탈-계급화, 탈-중앙 집권화, 탈-물질화 등 독특한 조형어법을 만들어낸다. 이런 종형어법들은 환경예술에서 환경과 인간에 대한 인식을 대신 표현했다고 볼 수 있다. 이렇게 환경에 대한 인식이 높아질 때 디자인에 있어서도 환경예술보다 더욱 밀접한 관계로 디자인 분야에서 접근해야 될 필요성이 요구된다. 이 장에서는 우리의 전통문화, 예술성, 조형성, 토테니즘, 샤머니즘이 서양문화의 기술이념과 사상, 이론이 적용되지 않고서도 공간형성을 이루었는지 환경 디자인의 한 부분인 Land Mark를 통해, 제 3자에게 Communication될 수 있는 상징적 조형물과 공간 예술 물적인 것에 대해 조사하며, 한국적 Land Ma가는 어떤 의미와 형태를 지니고 있는지에 대해 조사하고 한국적 랜드마크의 주체성과 역사적인 고유성을 찾는 방법으로 연구한다.
