As a kind of disclaimer, concession expresses a condition that may obtain but has no effect on the result achieved. Concessives can be classified as definite and indefinite, based upon the definiteness of the conditional meaning revealed within the concessive clause. Indefinite alternative concessives specify the two or more extreme possibilities, which are exclusive between each other, and exclude any limitations between the given possibilities. In contrast, universal concessives pose neither the range nor limit of choice but emphasize the validity of the main proposition against the generalized or universalized challenge. The present study examines Old English constructions conveying the force of an indefinite universal concessive condition.
