The pulsatile blexrd flows in solid blcrod vessels are investigated numerically in order to understand some physiological phenomem in arteries. For the gennelry of the blond ees, els, onr-point stenosed and periodically stenosed blcxtd uesels aro ccmsidered. Taking advantage of aaisvnnnetrv in the problem, the stream function-vrnOicity torrnulation is used for the luverniag equations of the fluid flow. 111 the computations are perfcmed by using the II scheme of the finite difference method on the numericalh generated boundary-fitted rrthogonal curailinear coordinatestems. the flow lields are found to be dramatically different depending un the Strouhal number. When the Strouhtl number is (1) or larger, ttenw field is quite dynamic in the enae that the wnUices fcwnud during the previous period survive and exert residual stress un the blood vessel wall in the other hand, when the Slrouhal number is as small as 0(10), the clove fields are found to be in the quasistealv state. fhe uomputation results suggest tHal the deterioration of endothelial cell, may occur due W stnng Icrcal fliiufields near the stennsis and that tEe prohability ul platelet attachment to the blond vessel wall is higher in the region behind the stenosis. Fr the results fnr the periodically stenosed vesel, the so-called steady streaming phenomenm is confirmed. fhe steadt-streaming effect in a way channel is expmaed to increase the heat and mass transler rate without making the flow turbulent.
