In this paper, we made attempts to observe possible effects of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng, C. A. Meyer) on growth of E. coli K-12, lysozyme action on cell wall components, amounts of intracellular and extracellular cylic AMP, uptake rate of glucose, and morphological changes by EM. The growth rate of test was faster than that of control. The amounts of proteins and lipopolysaccharide of test were greater than that of control, However, total amount of cyclic AMP of control was greater than those of test. The uptake of glucose and rate of lysis by lysozyme of test were faster than those of control. In order to rationalize whether such trends are due to morphological changes in the presence of ginseng saponin or not, we employed electron microscopic methodology, Tentative as results is the periplasmic region is widened in test compared with that of control.
