We made attempts to see possible effects of the saponin fraction of Korean ginseng methanol extract (Panax ginseng D.A. Meyer) on growth of Bacillus substilis. We also studied the lysoaynte action on the organism and uptake of U-^(14)C-glucose. There were differences in lag time, growth rate and uptake rate of the glucose. Lysozyme activity seemed to increase in the presence of the saponin. The lysis of the microorganism grown on the saponin mixture was faster than that of control. In order to rationalze whether such differences are due to any change of cell wall in the presence of the saponin or not, we empolyed electron microscopic methodology. Some results will be presented.
