11S secretory IgA was isolated from human colostrum, and it was cleaved into subunits, i.e., heavy, light and J-chains. From the content and molecular weight of J-chain in the 11S IgA, it was concluded that the so-called secretory component is composed of 4 pieces of J-chain. The molecular weight of J-chain monomer was found to be 11, 500. The conclusion was also confirmed by the recombination test from 7S serum IgA and isolated J-chain. A structural model of human 11S secretory IgA was proposed, which is consistent with the electron microscopic picture of 11S IgA.
