한국근현대불교는 한국역사의 격동기인 근대와 현대에 맞물려있다. 이 시기의 불교는 일제강점기, 해방, 한국전쟁의 역사적 경험 속에서 일본불교의 침투와 일본화 해방과 친일잔재 청산, 불교개혁이 지속적으로 진행되고 있었다. 전통과 근대의 혼란과 개혁은 한국불교 지성들에게 많은 과제를 남겼고 새로운 시대에 걸맞는 불교를 준비하기 위해 진력하였다. 한국근현대불교사연구는 이와 같은 역사적 경험속에서 그 가치를 규명하는 일이다. 그러나 시작은 그 시절 활동했던 고승의 후학이나 사찰에서 전개되었고, 점차 학자들의 관심을 갖기 시작하였다. 한국근현대고승연구는 전통시대의 그것과 같이 일정한 역사적 가치를 지니고 있는 것이 사실이다. 아울러 불완전한 한국불교사의 복원과 완성을 위해서도 이 시기의 연구는 필요한 일이다. 한국불교학계는 근현대고승연구를 위해 자료를 수집해야 하고, 객관적이고 엄정한 역사인식을 수립해야 하며, 다양한 주제와 광범위한 연구범위를 마련해야 한다.

As a start, we can unfold stories from his Buddhist monks who were active in those days together with their temples and successors. Gradually this kind of study began to attract scholars' attention nowadays. It is true that the study of high Buddhist monks in the modern and contemporary Korea has a certain historical value like that of the traditional era. In addition, research in this period is necessary for the restoration and completion of the imperfect Korean Buddhist history.
