이 연구는 베트남전쟁에 대한 시민사회의 기억투쟁이 본격화 되기 이전 시기에 발표된 안정효의 『하얀 전쟁』에 나타나는 유령과 유령적인 것의 논리를 출몰의 경험, 사회적 메커니즘, 재현과 타자성, 제도적 대응이라는 네 가지 측면으로 분석한다. 이 작품에서 유령의 출몰에 대한 경험은 일상적 시공간의 자명함이 어떤 계기에 의해 깨지는 충격의 경험과 연결된다. 또한 주인공과 동료들, 그리고 한국사회의 결속들은 유령이 특정 기억에 대한 사회적 공모작업에 의해 산출되며, 어떠한 서사에 앞서 이미 지워진 채로 존재하고 있음을 드러낸다. 주인공을 괴롭히는 다양한 유령의 형상들은 유령은 하나의 존재가 아니라 사회적 타자들의 행렬로 존재하는 복수의 존재임을 보여준다. 마지막으로 이 연구는 유령에 대한 대응이 유령을 쫓아내려는 시도와 함께 그것이 죽은 자의 무기여야 했다는 이중적 방식으로 나타나고 있음에 주목한다. 근대적 서사를 ‘유령’의 관점에서 요소들을 재배열하고 독해하는 것은 구체적인 목소리를 가질 수 없었던 타자에게 이야기할 권리를 넘겨주는 작업의 출발이 될 것이다.

This study analyzes the logic of ‘ghost’ or ghostly matters, through four dimensions of experiences of haunting, social mechanism of production, representation of alterity, and responses to the ghosts, in Ha-yan-jeon-jaeng (published in English titled as White Badge) published before the Korean civil society challenged the country’s official memory. In this text, the experiences of haunting are connected to the experiences of broken mundane time and space. And collusion among the Korean society, protagonist and his colleagues shows that ghosts are produced by conspiracy of silence on selected memories and they had preexisted before the story began. Also, many ghostly matters in the text show the ghosts exist more than one, connecting memories of battlefield to the vietnamese refugees town in Seoul. Lastly, this study focuses on the story’s dual response to the ghosts in which the protagonist strives to expel them with a gun, and, simultaneously, it has must be done with the weapon belonging to the dead. Reading and realigning elements of stories in the perspective of the ghosts can be a starting point of giving rights of speaking to the others who could not have a voices.
