The purpose of this study was to research what direction the Korean vocabulary education had to be steered by identifying the trends of research on Korean vocabulary education. Initially, I searched the RISS with the keyword “Korean vocabulary education” and organized the relevant data by year, learner characteristics, and vocabulary type etc. Through the data analysis, I was able to identify several trends. The trend by could be divided into three different time periods depending on the trend of study. Although research on learner proficiency was evenly represented, the studies on the nationality of target learners were mostly represented by Chinese while studies on the types of learners were mostly represented by married foreign immigrant women. Overall, Traditional Chinese (Hanja) contributed the largest proportion of research and I incorporated a variety of research methods such as teaching material analysis, experimental research and surveys in my research. As for the measures for teaching, research on teaching methods were the most popular. Through these results, I propose that more research needs to be done based on the geography of language, proficiency levels, special purposes, and various languages while the measures for teaching be objectively evaluated through this research.

This study aims to investigate the syntactic and discourse/pragmatic developmental pattern of word order of 3 Chinese learners based on their longitudinal Korean writing and interview data for 1 year and 6 months. The results of this study are as follows. First, learner A, learner B, and learner C often failed to correctly use word order items that were not properly mastered at the beginner level even at the intermediate level or advanced level. In particular, it is difficult for learners to master general adverbs 'many(많이)', 'well(잘)', frequency adverbs 'always(항상)', and negation adverbs '안' regardless of proficiency. The three learners could not master word order for inter-adverbs, word order for complex sentence elements, or word order of noun phrases even at advanced level. Second, this study also examined whether Chinese learners of Korean use word order as a communication strategy with discourse function. Although a few cases have been found for the 3 learners where they increased the clarity of discourse or attempted to communicate effectively through a leftward inversion or a rightward inversion, more often cases have been found in which the word order inversion was overused in situations where the learner did not need the specific discourse function intended. The latter cases were all found in the intermediate level or higher.

This study confirms its utility and completeness by designing and actually experimenting with the principles and models while proposing the use of an electronic portfolio to evaluate the performance of Korean speech. The speaking evaluation using electronic portfolios has not only improved efficiency and practicality compared to the existing portfolio evaluation, but has also been effective in drawing active participation and interest from learners. This study contributes to the exploration of the direction of speech achievement evaluation through the use of digital-based electronic portfolio in the environment of transition to non-face-to-face education that has recently been newly created.

This study aims to examine the usage of request speech act's strategies of Vietnamese Korean learners, and to discuss the implications of improving their pragmatic abilities. In order to achieve this purpose, this study used the most commonly used Discourse Completion Test (DCT) data collection method in speech act research. The respondents to the DCT were 39 Vietnamese learners of Korean language with a Topik Certificate of Grade 4 or higher. Studies have shown that in the scenarios of head act, Vietnamese learners generally preferred indirect request strategies over direct request strategies. Vietnamese learners were found to have used more request strategies in cases of high intimacy, compared to those with low intimacy. In addition, there were strategies that appeared only in situations where intimacy was high, but did not appear in situations where intimacy was low (such as discourse cover strategies, joking strategies, criticizing strategies) and, on the contrary, only when intimacy was low (understanding/self-introduction). Therefore, for Vietnamese learners, we need a request painting style education that can represent various strategies for making various requests. Moreover, it is necessary to educate Vietnamese learners on the speech act of request so that they can use appropriate strategies in appropriate situations by including various variables such as intimacy and social status.

This study analyzed Korean language textbooks focusing on how and for what purpose visual texts have been used over the last 30 years. The analysis centered on types of visual texts, changes in language usage, and methods of composing textbook units. The result of the analysis shows that there were changes in the use of images one of the types of visual texts at the unit introductory section. And visual texts were used only partially in the vocabulary section, but recently they are used also in teaching and learning grammar. Furthermore, the study also found that visual texts were used only in part of the textbook unit composition, but recently they are used in all parts of it.
The Korean language education is generally divided into several areas such as vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This study is meaningful because, in each of these areas, it analyzed how visual texts have been used for teaching and learning.

This study investigates whether measures of explicit knowledge are affected by demands on attentional resources made by random digit generation as a secondary task during a grammatical judgment task, and whether the subjective threshold criterion may dissociate implicit and explicit grammatical knowledge of learners of Korean as second language (L2). Thirty participants performed a grammatical judgment test and reported how confident they are in their decision for each judgment. A half of them were randomly assigned to the sing-task condition and the other half to the dual-task condition. The results of the experiment are as follows: firstly, the quality of explicit knowledge under the dual-task condition was not impaired; secondly, the accuracy of high confidence reponses did not significantly differ from that of low confidence responses; thirdly, the calibration curve for the single-task condition was fairly closer to the regression line representing perfect calibration than that for the dual-task condition; and finally, the signal detection analysis exhibited the learners' ability to discriminate between correct and incorrect responses. These findings suggest that random digit generation as a secondary task may not be suitable for facilitating the use of implicit L2 knowledge, whereas the subjective threshold criterion can be useful for separating between implicit and explicit L2 knowledge.

This study was conducted to develop an instructional model to teach intermediate and advanced Korean learners' Empathic Listener Response Strategies' and suggest specific examples of teaching-learning methods, which are applicable to an instruction. The procedures of developing an instructional model are as follows. First, teaching and learning principles and directions for developing an instructional model to teach about empathic listener response strategies were examined and established through a theoretical inquiry into educational and instructional models of empathic communication. Based on these principles and directions, an instructional model was suggested, along with teaching-learning methods and teaching-learning examples considering different stages of instruction. The 'Empathy-Based Regressive Repetition' Model devised in this study consists of six stages: Entry, Stimulation, Perceiving Strategies, Practicing Strategies, Applying Strategies and Sharing of thinking. At the stage of Stimulation, Perceiving Strategies, Practicing Strategies and Applying Strategies, it is possible to return to the previous stage depending on achievement levels of learners, for repeated learning. The stage of Applying Strategies allows an instructor to choose a basic class or an intensive class in the light of learners' levels, for flexible teaching. The stage of Sharing of thinking aims to make learners realize that listening attentively and feeling empathy could enhance confidence while speaking and promote utterance of the other person, and internalize respect for and acceptance of others in the process of recognizing diversity and difference.

This study is aimed at defining the concept of the newly coined language and discussing its formation in terms of neologism education for foreign learners. The ultimate goal of this study is to extract and select highly productive word constituent of neologism to enhance efficiency in vocabulary education. The characteristics of the newly coined words that this study wants to select can be summarized as follows: words used for a relatively long period of time, words widely used in daily oral communication, and the words which are not listed in the official dictionaries. Neologism are formed by compounding, derivation, and contraction. Blending is included in compounding, and contraction includes word clipping and initialism. This study suggested a list of 20 highly productive word constituent of neologism, which are extracted from 2,000 newly coined words registered in the 'Open Dictionary' of the portal site 'Naver'. The results of this study is expected to contribute to improving the efficiency of Korean neologism education for foreign learners.

This paper would like to share the operational experience of non-face-to-face real-time online Korean language classes conducted entirely at the institutional level, and suggest future improvements for the first time in Korea. COVID 19, which occurred in 2019, forced education around the world to undergo rapid changes with non-face-to-face education. The institute where this research was also conducted ran classes using real-time video class applications for learners throughout the entire course. A survey of 335 learners and 93 teachers was conducted after a real-time Korean language class in a semester. The investigation found problems in the psychological aspects, such as difficulties in technical aspects and learners' understanding of class, and the weakening of class atmosphere and motivation. To improve this, it is necessary to strengthen the pre-education and supplement the manpower that solves technical problems, provide diverse and rich teaching materials and expand the opportunity for students to ask questions and speak, create a free and active teaching atmosphere, and make efforts to motivate the learners by the teachers. Furthermore, It is expected that non-face-to-face real-time classes will be established as new courses for various learners, not as an alternative to offline ones.

This study examined combinatorial restrictions of preceding verbs and subjects with the auxiliary verb construction '-e peli-' depending on two different modal meanings: 'feeling of regret/disappointment' and 'feeling of relief'. In this study, the errors of sentences with '-e peli-' were categorized by two different modal meanings and the restrictions of preceding verbs were reviewed by analyzing the causes of errors. As a result, when '-e peli-' is used as the modal meaning of 'feeling of relief', there were more complicated restrictions of preceding verbs than when '-e peli-' was used as the modal meaning of 'feeling of regret/disappointment'. In the case that '-e peli-' is used as the modal meaning of 'feeling of relief' and the subject is the first person, the preceding verbs require the will of the subject and must be manageable by the subject. This restriction is noteworthy and has to be explicitly taught due to the learners making the errors with this grammatical restriction most frequently while it is not the case when '-e peli-' is used as the modal meaning of 'feeling of regret/ disappointment'. When the subject is not the first person, the preceding verbs don't require the will of the subject and don't have to be manageable, but there was a semantic restriction of the subject; an inanimate object or abstract noun as the subject must be the negative entity that the speaker wants to remove. The inanimate object or abstract noun can be used as the subject in the sentence with the modal meaning of 'feeling of regret/disappointment' as well, but it doesn't have the semantic restriction.
