A study on communication between medical students and patients and/or their guardians during clinical clerkships: A qualitative research

This study explored communications between patients (and/or their guardians) and medical students during clinical clerkships or rotation training, which refers to the practice of medicine during medical students’ third or fourth years of study. The study first identified existing problems in their communication to seek resolutions to better communication by analyzing both students’ reports collected over three years and narrative interview data of experiences of patients (and/or their guardians) while communicating with clerkship students.
As a result of analyzing the data, this study revealed that patients and their guardians found communication with clerkship students uninformed, unprofessional, halfhearted, and meaningless. They also complained that some clerkship students attempted conversation with patients and their guardians at inappropriate and inconvenient times, like during the early dawn. Most clerkship students experienced negative reactions from patients and their guardians while communicating with them; these reactions included ignorance, refusal, noncooperation, insincerity, discomfort, annoyance, or anger. Such negative responses to these students tremendously affected them and caused them to negatively criticize themselves while becoming frustrated and atrophied, leading the students to passively engage in training.
To improve communication between the student trainees and patients and their guardians, this study proposed the following four suggestions. First, clerkship directors or advisors should find steps to appropriately introduce clerkship students to patients and/or their guardians before a clinical clerkship begins. Second, clerkship directors and teaching hospital personnel must inform patients and their guardians of the role of teaching hospitals as clinical training centers to seek cooperation and understanding regarding medical clerkships. Third, standardized guidelines or manuals (e.g. what, when, and how to communicate with patients) for better and more effective communication with patients and their guardians should be provided to students before they begin clinical clerkship training. Finally, a systematic medical communication curriculum should be implemented for students so that they are trained on basic communication skills such as listening, empathy, consideration, and respect for patients.

This study focused on clarifying the functions and types of speech titles. In this study, the speech titles are regarded as an important component of the speech discourse, and the functions and the types of speech titles have been analyzed in relation to the speech discourses. It has been demonstrated that the main function of speech titles is to show the topic and the theme of the speeches. In addition, it has been revealed that speech discourses directly accept the titles as the topic or the theme. This study suggests that the speech titles should be written in a direction that directly indicates the topic or the theme of the speeches.

This article explores how the power structures in discourses are reflected and become encoded in discourse strategies from the viewpoint of Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis.
The target data is Vladimir Putin's annual press conference. Firstly, the metaphors represent shifting responsibility on another. Putin appears to have expressed a strong sense of responsibility for others by using metaphors. Secondly, rhetorical questions reveal getting the start on another. In particular, it was found that the frequency of the rhetorical questions is very high. This can be interpreted as being used as a means to emphasize one's speech. Thirdly, it is verified that so-called higher power participant in the discourse interrupts utterance of low power participant in the discourse. Fourthly, it was obviously revealed in the discourse that the advantageous structure for higher power participant's statement was backgrounded. Furthermore, this study reveals further feature to Fairclough's the set of formal features. It is the 'characterized agent'. Characterizing the agent, higher power participant in the discourse constricts another participant.

This study is about the text of lyrics in the Seodojabga of Korean traditional music genre called Oral literature. Analyzing the text of the lyrics that form the backbone of the song and grasping its meaning will reveal the core of communication and present an important methodology for the expression of the musical background necessary to convey the meaning of the song.
Accordingly, this study uncovers the textuality revealed in lyrics through textlinguistic analysis, focusing on coherence and cohesion that appear in the lyrics of the 'Baettaragi' of the Seodojabga artist who sang the joys and sorrows of the boatman's life among the traditional sounds of Pyeongan-do and Hwanghae-do. We tried to grasp in depth the functions of textuality other than musicality. As a result of this, it was first confirmed that the devices for the cohesion of the Text were very tightly connected, and in particular, the prominence of the parallel structure and the repeating ending was revealed. Also, as a result of analyzing the cohesion, it was confirmed that the vocabulary that expresses the contents are structurally described around nouns, adjectives, and verbs, and that they are connected to isotopy such as 'ship', 'voyage', etc. of the entire contents, and it was connected by the Structure of Theme-Rheme of Prager School. Thus, it was possible to grasp the possibility of the reconsideration of textuality of oral literature. and it was found that the functions and features of the cohesion and coherence were systematized. Furthermore, it was found that the cohesion and coherence were very elaborately structured in terms of the content of Korean oral literature.

This study examines the characteristics of the text area of the Korean standard curriculum as a foreign language through the review of the internal system of the curriculum and its comparison with other curricula. Chapter 2 investigates how the text area is set up in the course of developing the curriculum, and chapter 3 compares and reviews Korean standard curriculum as a foreign language and Korean language-related curricula in which text is set as a component of the content system. The status of the text area in the Korean standard curriculum as a foreign language appears to change in the curriculum development process, but this is only a change in the normal position of the curriculum, and what is actually dealt with is limited to the aspect of educational materials. Looking at the way text area is organized in three ways, text items selection, text grade, and text classification, there are some problems in each part, but particularly with regard to text classification, it is necessary to review it in various directions such as terminology, characteristics of categories, and relationships among categories. Among Korean languagerelated curricula, the KSL curriculum appears simple, without the type classification of text. On the other hand, the reading curriculum of the Korean as a foreign language combines the text type and the structural knowledge of the text necessary to understand the text, while the Korean language curriculum presents text items as educational materials and content elements for text type education according to the characteristics of the language use area. In the case of the Korean standard curriculum as a foreign language, more diverse approaches are needed to educationally implement the functions of text in language education.

'Leichte Sprache'(easy language) is a specially designed form of language for people who have learning difficulties. In this study I have analysed the guidelines on Leichte Sprache developed by German researchers, and tried to apply them to rewriting Korean language texts in Leichte Sprache. I have also suggested that the macrorules of van Dijk and the design creteria of Robert de Beaugrande can be applied to develop the writing strategies of Leichte Sprache. Some public notices as well as newspaper articles in ordinary Korean language have been successfully rewritten in Leichte Sprache according to the guidelines and strategies which I have developed and newly suggested in this study.

Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit besteht darin, die Diskursfunktion von 'jom', das die verschiedenen Diskursfunktionen hat, aus funktional-pragmatischer Sicht zu analysieren. Die Diversifizierung der Funktionen sprachlicher Ausdrucke wurde als das Ergebnis des Sprachwandels betrachtet, und die Diskursfunktion wurde aus den inharenten d.h. lexikalischen Merkmalen der sprachlichen Ausdrucke fur die systematische Analyse, die dem Wesen des sprachlichen Handelns nahe kommt, geklart. Aus funktional- pragmatischer Sicht wurde 'jom' von der Durchfuhrung der nennenden Prozedur auf die Durchfuhrung der operativen Prozedur funktionalisiert. Die Interviewdaten wurden zur Analyse der Funktionen von 'jom' ausgewertet. Dadurch konnten vier Funktionen, namlich, Einschrankung des semantischen Grades des folgenden sprachlichen Handelns (nennende Prozedur), Schwachung des sprachlichen Handelns (operative Prozedur), Hervorhebung des sprachlichen Handelns (operative Prozedur) und Einleitung des sprachlichen Handelns (operative Prozedur) festgestellt werden. 'jom', das die operative Prozedur durchfuhrt, erhoht die Wirkung des sprachlichen Handelns, indem es die Illokution vom sprachlichen Handeln schwacht oder vorhergehendes sprachliches Handeln betont. Zudem verbindet sich 'jom', das die operative Prozedur durchfuhrt, auf naturliche Weise mit neu einleitendem sprachlichem Handeln und tragt zur konstruktiven Ebene des sprachlichen Handelns bei.

This paper used newspaper corpus and the novel corpus as a comparative group to examine the distributional features of the 'shell nouns' which has a dependent characteristic among korean nouns. The main purpose of this article is to describe the distributional characteristics of the shell nouns by genre based on the quantitative results of corpus. As a result, in the case of newspaper texts, the shell noun is mainly combined with the '-daneun' clause to form the shell noun phrase. In the case of fiction, the combination with the '-daneun' clause is significantly lower than that of the newspaper, but the use of other shell noun phrases is high. The difference between these aspects is that there are shell noun phrases that a particular genre prefers and can be concluded that the functional part of the shell noun phrases is in contract with the nature of the genre. Therefore, this paper is meaningful in that it has further revealed that there is a preferred shell noun phrase by genre, and its function also varies depending on the genre.
