Scalp Improvement Cosmetics’ Natural Substance Development Trend - Focused on Plant Extracts and Marine Life -

This review was performed to provide basic data on scalp improvement cosmetics’ natural substances. Lespedeza cuneate’s extract was found to decrease the scalp dead skin cells, microorganism, and erythema and improve pustular acne. Centella asiatica extract controls the expression of IL-1β and improve the scalp’s erythema. Arctium lappa L. root extract decreases the scalp bacteria and sebum, and increase moistures. The root extract also decreases the dead skin cells around pores and make scalp’s red spots clearer. Rooibos extract improves water-oil balance of seborrheic scalp and effectively enhances scalp’s itching, redness, and scalp tone. A pussy willow stem’s ethanol extract displays the effect of antioxidant, anti-inflammation, protection of HaCaT cells and increase of dermal cells. A pussy willow leaves ethanol extract shows antibacterial activation. An astringent persimmon extract increases hair length/density and hair follicle cells. Hibiscus extract has high activation of antioxidant and improved pores and scalp condition, and decreases exposure of scalp’s blood vessels, sebum and dead skin cells. Stichopus japonicus extract decreases sebum and improves scalp tone and pores. It also increases hair density and thickness. SUC ATCoL SS which is blue shark fin extract can reduce hair loss, improve scalp’s condition (itchiness, dandruff, trouble.), and increase hair density and thickness. Among microalgae, it was shown that SO and CG have antioxidant effects, induce cell proliferation, inhibit 5-alpha reductase activity. Studies on scalp remedy cosmetics’ natural substance which is effective in improving the scalp should be done in a more in-depth manner. Also, scalp’s problematic symptom is not limited to one thing, so studies on materials that brings scalp improvement should also be performed.
