Objectives:This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Corni Fructus, the dried fruits of Cornus officinalis Sieb., on unilateral common carotid artery occlusion (UCCAO) in mouse model.
Methods:The Corni Fructus used in the experiment was extracted with anhydrous methanol, then filtered and freeze-dried. C57BL/6 mice used in the experiments were conducted left UCCAO surgery to set up UCCAO rodent model for mice. The mice were divided into five groups for evaluate the effect of methanol extract of Corni Fructus (COM) on UCCAO induced ischemic brain injury. The expression levels of nitric oxide in cerebrum and serum, body weight change were measured. To determine the effect of UCCAO and COM administration on brain neurons, morphological changes of the cerebrum through a microscope was conducted. And western blot was performed to confirm the underlying mechanism of neuroprotective effect of COM administration.
Results:COM administered UCCAO groups (CO50, CO150, and CO500) had no significant effects on nitric oxide production in ipsilateral hemisphere proteins and sera. The CO500, 500 mg/kg COM administration, attenuated UCCAO-induced p38 inflammatory signaling pathway and inflammatory mediators such as iNOS and COX-2. The CO500 group showed resilient morphological changes of hippocampus neuronal cells about brain damage caused by decreased flow of blood. These group also showed decreased inflammation and cellular stress response in neuronal cells.
Conclusions:From these results, COM has a neuroprotective property via moderating inflammatory factors and cellular stress inducing factors in brain cells.1)

Objectives:We tried to establish standards for genuine by discriminating 3 kinds of pollen and spore herbs that are highly to be mixed with each other. Using an scanning electron microscope, we prepare a standard for discriminating external morphological characters of minute herbs, thereby contributing to the stable supply of genuine herbal medicines.
Methods:Standard samples were confirmed by literature review on external morphological characteristics of original plants and herbal medicines, and collection and identification of original plants. The herbal medicines on the market were purchased and classified with using naked eye observation and magnifier. Finally, micromorphological identifications were conducted using an scanning electron microscope.
Results:1. Pini Pollen was clearly distinguished by its relatively medium size and a pollen grain with two swollen reticulate sacci at both ends. The verrucate ornamentation on the exine surface of the corpus and a sunken leptoma germ pore may be used as a discrimination criteria. 2. Typhae Pollen was distinguished by its relatively small size and a saccus on the end of a pollen grain. Reticulate ornamentation of exine surface of the corpus, and a slightly clear ulcerate germ pore can be used as a discrimination criteria. 3. Lygodii Spora was distinguished by its relatively large triangular-ovate shape and trichotomous fissure. Verrucatetuberculate ornamentation of exine surface and trilete aperture could be used as a discrimination criteria.
Conclusion:These results indicate that the use of electron microscopy is very effective for discriminating the external morphology of minute herbal medicines. 1)

Objects:The daily dose of Pinelliae Tuber in ≪Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases≫ is half seung in volume, two and half ryang in weight, and fifteen in total number. But the daily dose should be a whole number. So I found out the background of this setting and correct solution.
Methods:I searched Classics of Traditional Medicine, found out the background of the daily dose setting, solution.
Results:The daily dose of Pinelliae tuber in ≪Hangdi's Internal Classic Miraculous Pivot≫, ≪Bohenggyuljangbuyongyakbeobyo≫ is half seung. ≪Treatise on Cold Dameage Diseases≫ followed the same daily dose of that because it referred to these books. In ≪Synopsis of Prescription of the Golden Chamber≫, the daily dose of that is half seung, one or two seung. The half seung of the Pinelliae Tuber is thirty three mL, but the diameter is 1~1.5 cm that accurate measurement by volume is difficult. The daily dose by weight is correct considering the unity of marking of the daily dose, accuracy of measurement, the fact that Pinelliae Tuber is currently distributed by cutting. So, two ryang is correct which is thirteen gram.
Conclusions:Considering the traditionality, the convenience of measurement, the daily dose of Pinelliae Tuber in the ≪Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases≫ is half seung, but considering the unity, accuracy, current state of distribution, it is correct that the daily dose of it is two ryang. It corresponds to thirteen gram.

Objectives:In previous studies, I presented various effects of Seosiokyongsan (SSOOS) cp soap on facial skin. However, in the case of skin clinical trials, various factors such as lifestyle, alcohol, tobacco, and stress could not be excluded. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of face wash using SSOOS cp soap on the skin without environmental factors.
Methods:The same water and towel were used at the same place in order to examine the skin change state immediately before and after washing face with SSOOS cp soap. The skin test was performed before washing the face and after 10 minutes washing the face to compare the changes. As a control group, the case of washing with water without using cleanser and the case of washing with S-K cleanser, which is a popular commercial product, were set. Three cases were compared and analyzed.
Results:In the case of water washing, the decrease in moisture was similar to that of the S-K cleanser and the amount of oil and pores decreased, but it was weaker than that of the S-K cleanser. The SSOOS cp soap showed a decrease in oil, pores, and pigments, but it was not significant, the moisture showed a significant decrease, but it was mild compared to S-K cleanser and water wash.
Conclusion:In the case of SSOOS cp soap, the stimulation caused by facial cleansing was the least, showing a gentle change.

Objectives:The objective of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of Corni Fructus 30% ethanol extract (CFE) on the monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis rats.
Methods:The subjects were divided into 4 groups ; Normal group (N, n=10), MIA-induced osteoarthritis control group (Con, n=10), indomethacin 5 ㎎/㎏ treated group (INDO, n=10), CFE 200 ㎎/㎏ treated group (CFE, n=10). Blood and articulation tissues were collected after two weeks of drug administration. Oxidative stress was analyzed with reactive oxygen species (ROS), peroxynitrite (ONOO-). And the Nuclear factor erythroid-2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase-1/2 (GPx-1/2), Nuclear Factor Kappa B p65 (NF- Bp65), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF ), interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin 1 (IL-1 ), matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) were investigated by western blot.
Results:The administration of CFE showed a significant reduction of changes in relative hind paw weight distribution. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and peroxy nitrite (ONOO-) levels of articulation tissues were significantly decreased in CFE compared to the control group. Western blot measurements of Nrf2, HO-1, SOD, catalase, GPx-1/2 showed that the CFE group was increased compared to the Con group. And western blot measurements of NF- Bp65, COX-2, iNOS, TNF , IL-6, IL-1 showed that the CFE group was reduced compared to the Con group. Also CFE group decreased MMP-1 and increased TIMP-1.
Conclusion:Based on the above results, it can be seen that osteoarthritis is improved when Corni Fructus 30% ethanol extract treated.

6옻나무-두충추출혼합물(ILF-RE)의 간기능 개선에 대한 유효성 및 안전성을 평가하기 위한 무작위배정 이중눈가림 인체적용시험

Objectives:The purpose of this study is to determine whether Rhus verniciflua Stokes with Latin name Lacca Sinica Exsiccata, and Eucommia ulmoides Oliver with Latin name Eucommiae Cortex Extract Combination (ILF-RE) improves laboratory test results in participants with liver function disorder.
Methods:This study was conducted at Woosuk university Korean medicine hospital where participants with high serum alanine transaminase (ALT) levels from 45 to 135 U/L were enrolled. Subjects received ILF-RE 3.6 g (1.2 g/day as ILF-RE) or placebo 3.6 g for 12 weeks. It was confirmed that urushiol was not detected in ILF-RE. The primary outcomes were the decrement degree of serum ALT and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels between two groups. The secondary outcomes were the decrement degree of serum aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LD), total bilirubin, total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG) and fatty liver index (FLI) levels between two groups. Adverse events, skin prick tests, laboratory tests, and vital signs were observed and analyzed to confirm the safety of ILF-RE.1)
Results:In the ILF-RE group, the liver function index ALT, GGT, lipid metabolism index TG, and fatty liver index FLI were significantly decreased compared to the placebo group. There was no significant difference in ILF-RE group in terms of adverse events, severe adverse events, skin prick test, laboratory test, and vital signs compared with placebo group.
Conclusions:ILF-RE was found to be effective in improving liver function. In addition, no clinically significant adverse events or body changes were observed during this study.

7빈랑자와 천련자 복합물의 만성 역류성 식도염에서 보호 효과

Objective:The aim of present study was to clarify the effect of Areca Semen and Toosendan Fructus Mixture (AT-mix) on chronic reflux esophagitis (CRE) in rats.
Methods:The antioxidant activity of AT-mix was measured through DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities in vitro . CRE was induced in SD rats (5 weeks, male) by ligating the border forestomach and granular portion with 2-0 silk and the duodenum near the pyloric portion was covered with 2-mm wide piece of 18-Fr Nélaton catheter. And then rats were treated AT-mix 200 mg/kg one daily for 14 days. The anti-oxidant and inflammatory protein levels were evaluated using western blotting.
Results:Gross lesion of esophageal mucosa after AT-mix treatment showed a superior enhancement compared with that of CRE control rats. AT-mix treatment strongly reduced both DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities (DPPH, IC50 8.15±0.14 μg/mL; ABTS, IC50 24.69±0.03 μg/mL, repspectively). Levels of the NADPH oxidase subunit including NOX4 and p22phox increased in CRE control rats. Otherwise, AT-mix treatment significantly reduced. The activation of Nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) led to significantly the up-regulation of HO-1. The inhibition of IκBα phosphorylation led to NF-κB inactivation. Subsequently, NF-κB inactivation significantly induced the decrease of COX-2, iNOS, TNF-α, and IL-6 protein expressions.
Conclusion:Taken together, these results suggest that AT-mix treatment can attenuate the esophageal mucosal ulcer though inhibiting NF-κB pathway and enhancing Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. Thus, the additional mechanism study about AT-mix would need for the development as a safe herbal therapy for CRE.
