The purpose of this thesis is to analyze No. 51 and 52 questions which are TOPIK Writing look into the problems and present a improvement plan. So I examined whether each question was properly consisted to evaluate the learners’ abilities of writing sentences and reviewed which direction is necessary to improve the problems if there are any ones. As a result, some problems were found in the forms of the answers, the way of offer of clue and texts of the No. 51 and 52 questions. The improvement plan to solve the problems is as follows. The sentence completion of the current stage seems to be more appropriate for the answer of No.51 question than the sentence writing of the early stage of reorganization. However, the answer should be the one that can be written by inferring from the context and include content and grammatical elements. We must make the text real by diversifying grammatical expressions, types of text, functions of writing and etc. We should reduce the blanks of the text into one and make the examinees write the complete sentence in it to evaluate the ability of writing the proper sentence unit in No.52 question. Various ways of writing development should be used in the text.

This paper aims to give the authentic material for teaching postpositional, 'eun/neun' and 'i/ga' to learners whose native language is English. Even though 'eun/neun' and 'i/ga' are presented at the first step of learning Korean, high level learners show errors in many ways. It's hard to find suitable materials for high level learners. To supply teachers in trouble with teaching 'eun/neun' and 'i/ga' for high level learners, this study suggests extracts from the actual novels with 'eun/neun' or 'i/ga'. Inputs from published materials are different from a real communicative world, which leads to learners' fossilized errors. This study subdivides high level learners into above average, average and under average then gives extracts from novels written in English or Korean with translations. Grammatical subcategorization of 'eon/neon' and 'i/ga' is from the standard under the Center for Teaching and Learning Korean and precedent studies. Based on the popularity and literary achievement, this study made extracts from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for under average learners, from Life of Pie, The Road and To Kill a Mockingbird for average learners and from Vegetarian and Human Acts for above average. Under average and average learners have time to translate the texts written in English into Korean whereas above average learners will have Korean author Han Kang's text translated by English native speaker. Through this course, learners can practice 'eon/neon' and 'i/ga' in contextualized context. It can lead Korean learners to acquire the ability of using 'eon/neon' and 'i/ga' fluently and correctly.

This study examines the status of language identity among Korean-Chinese living in Korea. The questionnaire was divided into two parts: Language use and identity in China and Korea. First, five factors were recognized to affect their Language identity in China. Furthermore, regression analysis was conducted to identify the relationship among each factor and the importance of speaking two languages to the respondents. As a result, a regression model shows about 47% relation. Next, seven factors were found to affect their language identity in Korea. Then regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between the importance of bilingualism and each factor. However, it was found that all of the variables except for academic background had no relationship with the importance of bilingualism. This suggests that Korean society is still at the beginning stage of multicultural society and shows a lack of research frame on the identity and language use of Korean-Chinese and other groups with multicultural backgrounds. In conclusion, this study clarified the components of which the language identity of Korean-Chinese residing in Korea consists. However, a further qualitative research, including in-depth interviews, is still needed to make the significance of Korean-Chinese bilingualism better recognized.

The purpose of this study is to present the Korean culture education method based on current events for foreign students. Especially, in this study, TV news was used as a primary medium for presenting Korean culture education based on current events. The reason for choosing TV news as the primary medium for Korean culture education is as follows. First, by activating social communication functions, 'participatory communication' with members in Korean society can be achieved. Second, the knowledge of Korean culture can be integrated. Third, by cultivating multimodal literacy, it is possible to decode and communicate Korean and Korean culture in various media. Next, the characteristics of TV news for applying to teaching-learning are as follows. First, TV news is a visual media, characterized by 'multimodal', Second, TV news is structured to interpret real - world events or information and deliver it efficiently in a short time. Therefore, it has a certain structure. Third, TV news offers 'information volume' at the same time. The final goal of the Korean culture education model based on current events is the 'internalization' of Korean cultural knowledge, which is explained through Vygotsky's theory of higher mental functions and the concept of ZPD(Zone of Proximal Development). Finally, based on the above, 'Korean Culture Education Model based on current events' was devised and the actual education was shown.

The aim of this study is to investigate the motivation of learning the Korean language for Japanese university students who do not major in Korean. In the analysis, we compared different types of motivation for the participants classified with two different variables: gender and presence of former experience in Korea-related fields. In addition, we compared this study with the 2014 survey to examine if there were any longitudinal differences.
We conducted a survey with 552 students in twelve different regions in Japan. We found that most of the students who were enrolled in a non-major Korean language course had an internal motivation. Not many students, both male and female, were taking the Korean language class for a practical reason. This study also showed that those students who previously visited Korea were taking the language class with an internal motivation. Former experience in making Korean friends or learning the language did not seem to play an important role to form students' motivation to take the Korean language class. As we compare the results of the current study and the 2014 study, it is noteworthy that external motivation has decreased and internal motivation has increased in contrast. Namely, internal motivation has become more crucial over time. The findings of this study will contribute to recalibrating the purpose of Korean language education as an elective subject in Japanese universities.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the refusal speech act strategies of Vietnamese Native Speakers (VNS) and Korean Native Speakers (KNS). Furthermore, this study is to find similarities and differences in the usage patterns focusing on cultural and linguistic aspects with comparative viewpoint. The research aims to provide basic data on the design of teaching and learning for Vietnamese Korean learners. To compare the patterns of refusal strategies between the two groups, the study looked at the refusal strategy patterns of 20 VNS and 20 KNS using the data collection method from the discourse completion test (DCT), which is commonly used in the speech act study. The results of the study are as follows. Firstly, with regard to the overall tendency of the use of refusal strategies by the KNS and VNS, both groups were confirm that they preferred indirect refusal strategies over direct refusal strategies. Secondly, differences emerged in the usage patterns of refusal strategies in the two groups according to the friendly relationship between conversation participants, where VNS showed that the closer the relationship was, the more direct or determined refusal strategies were used than KNS did. Thirdly, as there are refusal strategies that are widely used in Korean but not used in Vietnamese, or be useful to Vietnamese but not used by Korean, the education of refusal speech act should be focused on cultural characteristics in every language.

This study aims to observe the effectiveness on Korean stops training of VOTs(Voice Onset Time), vowel F0(Fundamental frequency) by Korean learners of various nationalities during a short period of time. 8 Korean speakers and 16 Korean learners(with two groups divided into experimental and control groups) from various countries participated in the phonetic experiment. VOTs of stops and following vowel F0s were measured. Three results were found. First, the control group showed similar values in VOTs of lenis, aspirated and tense stops in results before and after. The experimental group, on the other hand, showed longer aspirated and shorter tense VOTs after Korean stops training, making them similar to Korean speakers. Second, the control group showed no gap among the lenis, aspirated and tense F0s or different patterns from Korean speakers. The experimental group was similar to the Korean speakers' patterns by showing aspirated> tense> lenis F0s order. Third, despite the short term learning, VOTs and following vowel F0s of stops by Korean beginners improved. This study suggests recognizing the phonetic characteristics of Korean stops using visual data for effective pronunciation improvement for Korean beginners.

This study takes a look at Korean language Education from the perspective of lifelong education, and investigates how researches on this area should be conducted. After reviewing current research trends in terms of topic, object, methods and contents, suggestions for improvements are made. First, the necessity of research on Korean language education in the perspective of lifelong education and its social role and responsibility were emphasized. Second, it was found that high expectations are being placed on Korean language teaching for adult immigrants among other learner groups. Various keywords such as immigrants' life-cycle changes, consequent restructuring of life, assimilation, relationships, quality of life, sharing, happiness, growth were extracted. Third, the main channel for Korean language teaching in terms of lifelong education turned out to be online based and its approach was being developed in two separate branches, Korean language learning in general and Korean teacher training. Lastly, conclusions were drawn that the Korean language teaching materials should be closely associated with the learners' life, all in terms of temporal and spatial aspects, as well as individual and social contexts.

This paper examines which types of implicatures are particularly difficult for Vietnamese Korean language learners to understand and how their proficiency and residential experiences affect the level of understanding of specific types of implicatures. Research questions for this paper are as follows: (1) Is there a difference in the understanding of implicatures between freshmen Vietnamese Korean language students with low proficiency and more fluent junior and senior students? Among various types of implicatures, in which types do we see a difference in understanding? (2) Does the existence residential experience in Korea for more fluent junior and senior students impact their understanding of implicatures? Among various types of implicatures, in which types do we see a difference in understanding? While previous implicature studies were limited to categorizing implicatures according to compliance or flouting of maxims, this paper considers the process of sentence construction and unique socio-cultural factors to investigate the students' understanding of eight types of implicatures through sixteen questions. The results of this paper indicate that advanced proficiency raises the level of meaningful understanding of fixed conventional expressions, implied criticism and ironic expressions. Moreover, residential experience provides the sociocultural background knowledge necessary to raise the level of meaningful understanding of ironic expression, sociocultural implicature and metapragmatic implicature.

This study investigated effects of individual variables on speaking proficiency development of short-term study-abroad students in Korea. Forty-one learners were asked to complete a story recall task after watching a short Korean animation at the beginning and the end of the semester, and their responses were analyzed for syntactic development according to the CAF(Complexity, Accuracy, Fluency). This study also used self-reporting questionnaires to measure intercultural sensitivity, personality, and social networks. Results showed that although many participants achieved L2 gains in speaking proficiency on the whole during their study abroad, speaking complexity was meaningfully improved(p=.025) Specific subcategories of learners'variables that gave effect on improvement of speaking are as follows: I) Openness of personality had the most significant influence on improvement of speaking complexity(.589), ii) dispersion of social networks also had an effect on speaking complexity(.327), implying that the much interaction with Korean native speakers enhances Korean language learners' speaking complexity.
