Spiritual caregiving may be seen as a technique-based ministry. Empathic listening, effective use of silence, and other therapeutic interventions are invaluable for its provision. It is probable that caregivers may not see it as a function of the Holy Spirit. The study explored what Jesus’ care plan in Luke 4:18 and 19 entailed, its announcement on a Sabbath and the subsequent healings on the same hallowed day, the significance of being anointed and the role that the Holy Spirit played in Jesus’ ministry to broken humanity. The Johannine depiction of the Holy Spirit as the paraclete not only further illuminated the function of the Holy Spirit but described spiritual care roles. Paul’s explanation of the intercessory role of the Holy Spirit aids in providing a basis for this ministry. This article discusses the spiritual caregiving ministry in the post-modern era using Jesus and the Holy Spirit as the models. The function and role of the Holy Spirit in its provision in the work of Jesus and the significance of ἄλλον παράκλητον in the offices of a chaplain, a pastor and other caregivers form an important component.

초록보기

This paper believes that the ministry of music will significantly enhance the dissemination of the gospel to the world if the conventional method of writing music composition is adopted. This position agrees with the words of Vaughan (2018, p. 97) that “the ministry of the written word helped disseminate the gospel.” Thus, this paper is a comparative study. It used observation and interview method as tools for comparison. It compared Western music literature and materials with information received from African Church music composers and directors through the interview. Consequently, we found that both Western and African Churches used music in worship and have church-based composers and gospel music artists with the exception that Western music is notated, while African music largely depends on writing music texts/lyrics which hinges mainly on oral tradition. This paper, therefore, examined how Western music composition is preserved compared to African church music, concerning time, space, function, and life-span. The aim of the paper was, therefore, to enable African church-based composers and gospel musicians to understand better the importance of scoring music composition and provide conventional means by which this can be done. So, it recommends that earlier music compositions that teach or inculcate moral values and discipline be worked upon by the contemporary musicians, thus turning their waste to wealth for historical references as well as the preservation of our musical heritage, for the propagation of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to the glory of God.

초록보기

This paper examined the responsibility of African Christian preachers in helping the effort towards environmental sustainability in the continent. Africa, a highly resourced continent has some challenges in terms of managing its rate of poverty which in some ways has a connection with its level of environmental degradation. The paper employed a historical method and engaged the review of literature to examine some of the causes and nature of environmental problems in Africa, the concept of prophetic preaching biblically and theologically, and what African preachers can do to play their prophetic roles in mobilizing their congregations to participate in the effort to care for and sustain their God-given environment. Four such responsibilities were identified in this work as the exegetical task, the theological task, the homiletical task and the task of social responsibility. The paper posits that beyond what other methods can accomplish, a concerted mobilization effort through Christian preachers in Africa, known to be a very religious community, would go a very long way in bringing about environmental sustainability.

Biblical methodologies for Old Testament or New Testament are major elements to which some have called a crisis (Hasel, 1987, p. 9) that cannot be placed at the peripherals of Biblical theological issues. A Biblical theology advocated for, without a methodology, is as good as advocating to drive a vehicle that has no fuel. In this regard, it is plausible therefore to speak of biblical theology and biblical methodologies to establish their identities that seem to be under threat. The meaning of the Biblical text cannot be done without an operational biblical methodology (Correa, 2015). “It is of such transcendence that sometimes the methodology of the research and its resultant definition cause scholars to question whether the method has been well defined” (p. 300). This paper observes that the use of diverse methodologies in the task of Biblical theology attributes to the core of theological pluralism and diverse scholarly views. Furthermore, to understand the distinction between BT and Old Testament methodologies, their interdependence and exclusive nature, is as paramount as the process of doing exegesis on the text. The paper also underscores the dangers of the latent assumptions of the historical critical method in Old Testament methodologies, and affirms the preference methodologies grounded on underpinnings of the historical grammatical approach.

The Indian community in Dar es Salaam has hardly been witnessed to by the Seventh-day Adventist church. However, some Christian denominations have attempted reaching them. Hinduism is the main religion of the Indian community in Dar es Salaam, with a few belonging to Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. The purpose of the study was to develop a strategy to witness to the Indian community in Dar es Salaam, with a pilot implementation by a sample group of three Adventist church members. A pilot implementation of the intervention program followed with an evaluation. Two Indians were selected into a focus group because they were the only ones in the church and were the source of primary data of the Indian community. The selection of an African was purposeful. Methodology of research was qualitative because the researcher dealt with behaviors of the people. A summary of the information gathered from the focus group discussions was compiled and applied. As a result of the pilot implementation of the project, one young man was baptized from the Indian community. One India former member was reclaimed to Sabbath school at Magomeni SDA church. The study drew the following conclusions: First, the strategy, proposed by this study and tested by a pilot group, is an effective way of witnessing to the Indian community because of its positive results.

Matthew, the first gospel account recorded in the Bible, is embedded with several terms and concepts; notable among which is 'righteousness.' The concept arguably forms the central significant theme of Matthew's gospel. Though, righteousness here is seen in the ethical sense; Matthew refers to the proper behavioral norms and attitudes for his community which connotes the quality of being morally correct and justifiable; therefore, Matthew made use of the term in a vital and significant manner understandable to his readers. On this note, Matthew's style of presentation and expression of righteousness as a central significant theme of his account is examined and this in turn forms the theoretical framework of this paper.

The Preaching of Jesus usually refered to as the Sermon on the Mount (SOM) covers chapters 5-7 of the Matthian Gospel. Various issues were addressed by Jesus in this proclamation, but the focus of this paper is the issue addressed about the expected Christian's disposition to money (mammon). There have been diverse perspectives to how practicable are Jesus' presentations in the SOM: First that the Sermon is impossible praxis; second that the Sermon is apocalyptic in nature, so, it is not expected to be practiced now; third, that the sermon is only applicable during the millennia reign of Christ; fourth, that the Sermon is a representation of the ideal but not reality. And the fifth position is that the Sermon is practicable both in the public and private spheres of mankind. Thus, this paper alludes to the fifth position, and thus presents the admonition of Jesus in Matthew 6:19-34 as practicable for Christians. Jesus addressed the issue of material wealth in this passage, but the literary analysis did not show that Jesus was referring to money explicitly. However, in Jesus' addressing the relationship between His disciples and material wealth, it was noted that money was implied. Therefore, there is a demand on the Christian disciple to neglect allegiance to money in favour of allegiance to God.
