키처는 이른바 타협 모형을 제시한다. 타협 모형은 대안적인 과학적 합리성을 옹호하기 위해 키처가 제시하는 모형이다. 키처가 타협 모형을 내세운 이유는 다음과 같다. 키처는 기존의 합리성을 옹호하는 입장을 ‘전설’이라고 부른다. 이 전설의 핵심 요소를 담은 과학적 합리성 모형이 바로 합리주의 모형이다. 그런데 키처는 전설에 입각한 이 합리주의 모형이 과학을 제대로 설명하지 못한다고 본다. 한편 키처는 반합리주의 모형도 비판한다. 반합리주의 모형은 전설이 이야기하는 바의 핵심 요소를 받아들인 합리주의 모형을 비판하는 입장이다. 키처는 이 반합리주의 모형 역시 과학활동의 성격을 제대로 해명하지 못하는 것으로 규정하고 있다. 그리하여, 키처가 합리주의 모형과 반합리주의 모형 둘 다를 비판하면서 대안으로 제시한 과학적 합리성의 모형이 바로 타협 모형인 것이다. 즉 이 타협 모형은 합리주의 모형과 반합리주의 모형을 모두 공격하면서 키처가 제시하는 모형이다. 필자는 키처의 타협 모형의 가치와 의의를 비판적으로 검토하고자 한다. 그는 타협 모형을 지지해주는 주요 사례로서 ‘데본기 대논쟁’을 다루고 있다. 필자는 이 사례와 타협 모형의 관계를 또한 검토할 것이다. 논의의 후반부에서는 키처의 타협 모형은 독자성을 지니는 대안적 합리성의 모형이지만, 쿤의 과학철학과 상당히 가깝다는 점을 세밀히 밝히고자 한다. 즉 쿤의 과학관과 키처의 타협 모형이 어떻게 연관되는지를 논의하게 된다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 타협 모형은 과학 공동체 내의 ‘하부 그룹’과 연관된 맥락을 잘 설명해 준다는 점을 드러낼 것이다.

Kitcher posits so called his compromise model. Compromise model is Kitcher’s model for searching for an alternative scientific rationality. The reasons in which Kitcher posits his compromise model are as follows. Kitcher calls the position which defends existing rationality as the ‘Legend.’ The model for scientific rationality which includes essential elements of the Legend is rationalist model. Kitcher sees that this rationalist model cannot explain scientific rationality properly. Then he criticizes antirationalist model also. According to Kitcher, antirationalist model cannot account for scientific rationality either. So Kitcher attacks both rationalist model and antirationalist model, and posits compromise model as an alternative model for scientific rationality. I critically argue on Kitcher’s compromise model. He treats the Great Devonian Controversy as a major case for his compromise model. I explore the relationship between compromise model and the Great Devonian Controversy also. Later part of my paper, I reveal that although compromise model is independent model for scientific rationality, Kitcher’s compromise model is deeply influenced by Kuhn’s arguments on the character of scientific community and its subgroups.
