본 연구에서 다루고자 하는 『마경초집언해(馬經抄集諺解)』는 17세기경에 이서(李曙)라는 무인(武人)에 의해 집필된 말에 관한 실용 의학서이다. 이 책은 그 이전의 『마경대전(馬經大典)』과 『신편집성마의방(新編集成馬醫方)』을 초집하여 언해한 책이다. 저자 이서에 대한 자료는 그다지 전해지지 않았고, 그의 아버지가 제주목사였다는 것과 문과 출신의 학자가 임진왜란 후에 무인이 되어 형조판서와 공조판서를 거쳐 병자호란 때 병조판서를 지냈던 인물이라는 정도이다. 그는 『마경초집언해』이외에 『화포식언해(火砲式諺解)』와 『목장지도(牧場地圖)』를 집필했다. 이 책들의 성격은 당대 사회에 매우 실용적인 생활지침서였다는 공통점이 있다. 본고에서는 『마경초집언해』에서 말(마)을 기술(記述)하는 방법과 사상에는 말과 인간을 함께 보는 인문정신이 적극적으로 반영되어 있다고 판단하였다. 『동의보감(東醫寶鑑)』은 자연의 법칙을 수용하고 몸과 마음을 다스리기 위해 도교적 상상력을 쓰고 있고, 인륜과 통치를 위해서는 유교적 상상력을 활용하고, 인간과 자연이 유기적으로 이어져 있다는 상상력을 활용하기 위해서는 불교적 상상력을 융합적으로 활용했다. 이러한 인문정신의 발현이 이서의 글에도 그대로 적용되고 있음을 유추할 수 있다. “논마유부모(論馬有父母)”라는 글로 시작하는 『마경초집언해』의 상권에 보이는 기술방식은 대부분 유교와 도교와 불교의 인문정신에 기반을 둔 융합적 이야기 들이다. 하권은 구체적인 질병에 대한 대처 방안과 그림이 주를 이루고 있어서, 본고는 주로 상권에서 드러내는 인문정신의 논의들을 통해 말과 인간을 동일시하는 융합적 서술 태도를 면밀하게 검토하였다. 본 논의를 통해 17세기 말에 대한 인문정신의 단면을 들여다보고자 한다.

This paper is a study about Religious Imagination and Humanities Spirit of the Horse represented in YiSeo’s Makyungchojipeonhae(馬經抄集諺解) in the 17th Century. This book is a medical book written with humanities viewpoint and a successive book of MaKungDaJun(馬經大典), which is a previous horse medical book described with horse lifestyles and four seasons. YiSeo is a military man writing books which is about horse, cannon, and the map of pasture. YiSeo’s Makyungchojipeonhae utilizes humanities spirits and religious Imagination such as Confusionism, Taoism, and Buddhistic concerns to explain the horse characteristics to public soldiers and civilians. Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑) is a contemporary famous human medical book, which made use of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. In particular, in those days, the nation couldn’t prepare for the public medical treatments and care for the civilians. So civilians should know about the basic medical knowledge to care for himself and his horse. This article researches for the humanities spirit and religious Imagination represented in Makyungchojipeonhae to reveal the Korean traditional horse-caring daily culture and the stream of humanities spirits. Horse-caring daily culture as traditional korean practice stands comparison with utilizing by-product of horse such as functional material area and horse-re-lated sector in Korean horse industry from the viewpoint of modern economic activities.
