제주도 본풀이 <세민황제본풀이>는 ‘이승과 저승의 법도’를 문제 삼는 신화이다. 이 논문에서는 그 서사적 의미맥락을 창세신화의 연장선상에서 살펴보았다. 창세신화 <천지왕본풀이>는 실질적 능력자인 대별왕이 아닌 소별왕이 이승을 맡은 결과로 부조리와 해악이 남게 됐음을 말하고 있거니와, <세민황제본풀이>에 형상화된 이승과 저승 관계 양상이 그 미완의 과제와 관련된다고 본 입장이다. <세민황제본풀이>의 핵심 화두는 이승의 훼손된 법도에 대한 저승의 개입과 조정이라고 할 수 있다. 약자를 핍박하고 불도(佛道)를 탄압한 이승의 황제는 저승에서 엄한 다스림을 당한 뒤 크게 깨우쳐 불도를 다시 세우고 활인지덕을 닦는 삶으로 나아간다. 일련의 과정이 저승왕의 주재를 통해 이루어지는바, 저승왕이 이승에 실질적 영향력을 발휘하여 법도를 바로잡은 상황이 된다. 여기서 저승왕이 창세신화에서 저승을 맡았다는 대별왕과 그 속성 및 서사가 통한다는 점을 주목할 만하다. 그러한 연결이 성립될 때 <세민황제본풀이>는 자연스럽게 창세신화의 연장선에 위치하는 신화로 자리 매김될 수 있다. 이 신화는 그‘새로운 법도’와 관련하여 매일 장상이라는 민중적 인물을 규준으로 삼고 있는바, 민중신화적 속성을 잘 보여주는 면모가 된다. <세민황제본풀이>는 역사시대를 배경으로 삼는 가운데 세계의 질서와 법도 조정을 통한 ‘새로운 창세’를 말한다. 이 신화를 통해 우리는 ‘창세의 영원성’에 대한 민간신화 특유의 사유와 만날 수 있다. 창조의 과정이 태초의 일로 그치지 않고 시대를 관통하며 거듭 이어지는 가운데 세상의 질서가 바뀌어간다고 하는 인식이다. 세계의 역동성과 변화 가능성에 대한 믿음과 희망을 볼 수 있는 지점이다.

“Seminhwangje Bonpuri(世民皇帝本解)”, a shaman myth of Jejudo, focuses on 'customs in this world and the next'. This paper examined the semantic context of the narration as an extension of creation myth. In a creation myth called “Cheonjiwang Bonpuri(天地王本解)”, irrationalities and evils occurred in this world because not Daebyeolwang(대별왕) with the actual ability but Sobyeolwang(소별왕) took care of this world. In this study, the relation between this world and the next described in “Seminhwangje Bonpuri” is related to the unfinished task. It can be said that Basic topics of “Seminhwangje Bonpuri” are intervention and mediation from the underworld against the damaged customs in this world. The emperor in this world who had oppressed the weak and persecuted Buddhism is harshly punished by the King of the Underworld. As a result, he is enlightened and then starts to establish Buddhism again and to accumulate virtues for the people. The King of the Underworld corrected customs by exercising influence on this world. From our perspective, the King of the Underworld is equivalent to Daebyeolwang who took up the customs of the underworld in the creation myth. When such connections are formed, this myth will be naturally positioned as a myth as an extension of the creation myth. On the other hand, related to the 'new customs', “Seminhwangje Bonpuri” is based on popular figures called Jangsang and Maeil. This clearly shows the attribute as a folk myth. “Seminhwangje Bonpuri” describes the process that world order newly mediated against the backdrop of the historical era. This myth enables us to meet the specific perception of the 'eternity in the process of creation' in folk myth. The perception is that world order has changed while the creation process repeats again and again through the ages. This enables us to confirm the mythical idea of the dynamics and changeability of the world.
