In Oryx and Crake (2003), Margaret Atwood features an ecological double-discourse as she draws more attention to genetic engineering than anything else. Crake might be an ecological savior in that he creates genetically modified humans (Crakers) who are eco-friendly per se, and lets them reside on the earth after destroying almost all of anthropocentric humans. Corresponding with their technoscience-addled mind-set, Crake and Oryx reject all of humanistic art and thoughts whatsoever. Scientific reductionism involving Crake`s genetically modified animals contests his `brave new world` where GM animals like pigoons and wolvogs unexpectedly reveal their cruelty and violence to hurt and even kill humans. And a main character and narrator, Jimmy- Snowman`s position complicates the narrative of this novel. Jimmy countervails Crake`s ecological idealism as far as he is driven to reestablish such traditional humanitarian values as love, freedom, spiritualism, etc. `Words man` Jimmy-Snowman counterbalances the materialistic world-view of `numbers man` Crake. Entrapped in `zero hour,` however, Snowman suffers from aphasia which implies losing his sense of direction between humanitarianism and ecological idealism. Atwood not only demands readers to be alert of loosing the humanitarian values when Atwood obviously criticizes the limit of cutting-edge techno-scientific development and practice by presenting an eschatological disaster in the novel. But she also seems to show her eco-friendly position by contrasting humans` ecological vulnerability with nonhuman beings` wondrous adaptability to environmental change. Jimmy-Snowman better-reifies a between figure than any other character. (Chonnam University)

초록보기

This article examines the clerical portraits in some works of John Dryden and Henry Fielding. The literary tradition of portraiture of clergymen, in which both the positive and negative are juxtaposed, remained an integral part of the writers` technique. Dryden provided solid examples of worthy clerics by juxtaposing their exemplary lives with those of the corrupt clerics. Though the balance still existed, the references to good clergymen were politically charged and began to call the clergy`s role as moral reformer into question. Not simply and strictly following the balanced portraiture technique, Fielding provides the reader with varied portraiture of clergymen in which the distinct line between the positive and the negative cannot be drawn. Samuel Beckett reflects his philosophical thoughts which include absurdity and existentialism in his plays. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Beckett deals with the problems of human existence and the meaninglessness through his own ways in Endgame. His characters try to struggle with and find themselves in meaningless world which is filled with absurd situation. He represents absurd situation of reality and human`s despair as the concept of play. Beckett suggests human`s tragic life by describing meaninglessness and absurd reality. Characters identify their existence through the devices of conflict, competition, and continuous gestures in Endgame because Beckett intended to make audiences realize absurdity by using them. The effect of repetition makes audiences realize the usual life which has no change and conflicts between Hamm and Clov in Endgame. Without doubt, these devices are effective for audiences to identify the absurd reality concretely because Beckett wants audiences to interpret his work from various views, and tries to have distance from his work. In other words, he focuses on meaningless existence human faces in Endgame. After all, Beckett`s excellent achievement is the use of various techniques for expressing absurd environmental in his work. (Anyang University)

It is generally known that Charles Dickens disliked the Roman Catholicism. However, Dickens did not hate Catholicism itself, but rather its established religious affiliations. In this regard, he did not like any form of religion, the Roman Catholicism or the Church of England, when it asserts its violent and authoritative privileges at the sacrifice of human rights and freedom. Pictures from Italy is one of Dickens`s rare travel pieces. It is also the work that has been rarely dealt with by critics. This travelogue contains Dickens`s experiences and thoughts in his travels from France, Switzerland, and Italy during the period of 1844 and 1845 and shows his ideas about religion, the Roman Catholicism, profusely and distinctly. Therefore, Pictures from Italy is a work that we cannot ignore but have to discuss seriously when we talk of Dickens and religion. This paper aims to read this travelogue in view of his ideas and positions on Catholicism in detail. (Chungnam National University)

This essay explores Munro`s discourse of dementia which is a main theme in "The Bear Came Over the Mountain." Munro`s discourse of dementia destroys the conventional associations that have been established negatively. It defies dominant dementia narratives of decline or other-ed condition, instead it re-establishes a new empowering narrative of an opportunity for change and self-renewal. Fiona, a character with dementia, accepts her situation, voluntarily goes to a sanitorium and spends on meaning making. Her husband, Grant, having been disconcerted, admits different ways of thinking and gets self-growth by implementing altruistic performances for others. Munro expands her discourse of dementia into social issues by describing and revealing social services and systems. Munro`s discourse of dementia presents a positive alterative for individuals to confront future distressing circumstances and also contributes to future society by suggesting the needs of continuous change. In this paper I examine Sigrid Nunez`s Mitz, an animal biography of Mitz who was Virginia and Leonard Woolf`s companion marmoset. Inspired by Flush, Virginia Woolf`s biography of the Victorian poetess Elizabeth Barrett Browning`s pet dog Flush, Nunez wittily portrays the Woolfs` life and interactions with pets, Pinka, Sally, and, above all, Mitz, during the mid-1930s in England. Nunez`s biography engages us in contemporary philosophical discourses concerning animals, via her imaginative reconstruction of the Woolfs` affinity toward their animal companions and their intimate contact with Mitz, in particular. In my view, Mitz is not simply a hilarious story of the Woolfs and their animals, or a skillful mimicry of Flush. Rather, it is a significant text that proposes how we can overcome the continuing Western tradition of human-animal dichotomization and move toward becoming-with-animal companions. Although we can trace the Woolfs` anthropomorphizing attitude toward animals, Nunez vividly conveys, through her poetic imagination, the actuality of individual subjectivity, friendship, suffering, and mortality within non/human animals. Through the very teetering of the Woolfs between essentializing the terms that blur the peculiar subjectivities between animals and recognizing individuation in the animal, Mitz uncovers the Woolfs` encounter with alterity in the animal. Thereby, this animal story does not merely give us a literary fantasy to widen our world to better embrace animals within our life, but leads us onto an ethics of care, calling upon our responsibilities for nonhuman species. 초록보기

For the past decade, the problematics of ethics have positioned themselves firmly in the contemporary British drama. Tim Crouch`s four plays, My Arm, An Oak Tree, ENGLAND and The Author, offer a close inspection of ethical discourse on the British theatrical field following the emergence of In-Yer-Face theatre, and by doing so, Crouch attempts to redefine the ethical potential inherent within theatricality. The significance of Crouch`s plays within the context of ethical aspects of theatricality lies in the fact that his entire range of plays focuses on emphasizing spectatorship. His plays are void of any form of stage props, costume or lighting; dramatic narrative evolves solely through the encounter between actors and spectators. By preserving the traditional elements of theater, Crouch`s plays concentrate on rekindling and expanding the essential and potential role of spectators. This paper intends to review some of the ethical discourse surrounding recent developments in the English contemporary drama from In-Yer-Face theatre to postdrama and to analyze the ethical implications of spectatorship in Tim Crouch`s plays. 초록보기

Ellen Johnston was one of the few working-class women of Scotland who published a book of poems in the nineteenth-century and received a wide public acclaim. Her Autobiography, Poems and Songs of Ellen Johnston, the Factory Girl is important in that it has some distinctive qualities of working-class poetics that separate her poetry from the main stream, mid-upper class literature. Johnston follows the romantic tradition of rebellion. From the early years of her life, she left home to escape from the oppression of her stepfather and worked in a factory, establishing her life and poetic identity around factory and factory labor. In fact, these two exact elements were her most important poetic subjects. By detaching herself from a Victorian home, the ideal place for women, Johnston was able to criticize the domestic discourse and oppression women suffered there, from a viewpoint outside of it. She also made a poignant critique of the various social problems that she had experienced while engaged in factory work. Her social critique and reformist ideas had certain limits; nonetheless, they were an important and rarely heard public voice from a working-class woman in the contemporary Victorian society. The purpose of this paper is to explore significant syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic characteristics of reverse wh-clefts. This paper presents these characteristics through reviewing the analyses done by Collins(1991, 2004), Delin(1989), Oberlander and Delin(1996), and Calude(2008), which were based on the corpora of contemporary written and spoken English. Their deictic properties, in particular, originate from their highlighted demonstrative subjects and their cleft clauses obligatorily implying presuppositions containing variables. There exist four types of information structures in reverse wh-clefts as in it-clefts and wh-clefts. Furthermore, reverse wh-clefts can occur stage-initially or stage-medially with a pivotal discourse role and they sometimes function as speech acts in discourse. (Korea National Open University)

초록보기

This paper explores the approach to life of the Nepantlera appearing in the poetry of Sandra Cisneros. According to Chicana cultural theorist Gloria Anzaldua, Nepantla literature represents the new geography of contemporary American literature. Nepantla, from the Nahuatl word meaning in the middle, describes a mode of in-betweenness, a spanning of multi-layered cultures, and it is the fluid synergy between these layers which forms the aesthetic of Nepantla literature. Nepantlera are global citizens of the new world. The paper first explores the Nepantlera`s identity in the poetry of Sandra Cisneros as descendants of artistic guerrillas living according to their own internal values, outside the norms set by the dominant culture. As urban guerrillas, they call into question the notion of the obedient woman propounded in patriarchal societies and champion their dreams for a changed life. Second, their approach to life and love is compared to a solitary tango dance, which oversteps the rules of patriarchal marriage in pursuit of full narcissism and Nepantlism. Finally, the modern Chicana are likened to witches, living a life which simultaneously encompasses both myth and reality. They negotiate the haunted perceptions of the two extremes as they co-operate with the marginalized in the name of sisterhood. (Hannam University)
