본 논의의 출발은 김동인이 스스로 춘원 이광수와의 문학과 비교하며 자신에게 내리는 평가, 즉 이광수가 비록 <무정>에서 쓰고 있기는 하지만 불철저하였던 3인칭과 과거형 시제를 본인이 철저히 씀으로써 근대적 문체를 완성하여다는 평가에 의문을 품는 것에서 시작하였다. 이러한 작업은 김동인의 문학이나 비평, 그리고 그 문학사적 의의를 부정하는 것이 아니라, 그가 이뤄놓은 성취를 보다 정확하게 진단함으로써 우리 문학사에서 근대적 문체의 형성과정을 보다 정밀하게 고찰하는 것이다. 김동인은 <약한자의 슬픔>에서 과거형 종결어미를 철저히 확립하였다고 하지만, 실제 이 작품 뒤에 연이어 나온 <마음이 옅은자여>나 <전제자>, <배따라기> 등의 작품에서는 의외로 이러한 자신의 생각을 철저히 지키지 않았다. 그러나 이러한 김동인의 이중성은 과거형 종결어미의 지나친 사용으로 인해 유발되는 번역투의 문체의 한계를 극복하는 결과를 가져왔다. 또한 일기체와 액자형식과 같은 다양한 소설의 양식적 실험과 현재형의 적절한 사용, 순한글의 사용은 작품 속에 실재감과 현장감을 불러 넣어 리얼리티를 구현하는 효과를 가져왔다. 1920년대 초기 김동인 소설의 근대적 글쓰기에서 나타나는 이와 같은 모습은 조선의 근대적 문체가 일본의 근대적 문체에 대한 맹목적 수용으로 나타나는 번역적 문체가 아닌, 근대적 문체로서의 실험과 조선어의 특질을 적절히 살린 1920년대의 개성적 문체의 모습을 확립해가는 단초를 보여주는 것이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 김동인의 근대적 글쓰기의 특징은 현진건 등의 작품에서도 함께 볼 수 있다.

This study is performed with an arisen doubt as to Kim Dong-In`s self-evaluation in comparison with Chunwon Lee Kwang-Soo`s literary works saying that he avoided Lee Kwang Soo`s enlightenment and completed modern literary style by using the third personal point of view and the past tense perfectly which Lee Kwang-Soo used in < MooJung > and failed to use completely. This study is not to devaluate the achievement of Kim Dong-in`s literary works, criticisms, and his contributions to a history of literature but to study formative stages of creating modern literary style more thoroughly in the history of Korean literature by assessing his achievements systemically. Kim Dong-In claimed that he had succeeded in using the past tense verb forms thoroughly in < The Sorrow of the Weak >, but in fact, he failed to hold on to his principles in the following works such as < Maeumi yeoteun jayeo >, < jeonjeja >, and < Bettaragi >. Although he was double-dealing he overcame the problems in translational style caused by the past tense verb forms and succeeded in expressing the reality and the presence in his works with proper use of present tense verb forms. This double-dealing approach appeared in Kim Dong-In`s literary style in the early 1920`s shows that modern Korean literary style is not just a translational style by adapting modern Japanese literary style recklessly but a trial and a stepping-stone to develop modern Korean literary style with wise use of the Korean language. Theses characteristics of literary style in Kim Dong-In`s literary works appeared in other literary works by Hyun Jin-Geon and others.
