이 글은 최근 한국불교계에서 벌어진 ‘깨달음 논쟁’의 경과와 그 과정에서 제기된 중요한 쟁점들을 정리하고, 그에 대한 검토를 통해 오늘날 불교의 깨달음과 그 구현을 위해 한국불교가 나아가야 할 방향을 논하려는 것이다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 우선 처음에 제기된 문제와 그를 둘러싼 찬반양론에서 드러난 핵심 쟁점들을 정리하였다. 다음으로 이번 논쟁은 초기불교의 교리와 밀접히 관련되어 진행되어 온 만큼 이 글에서는 초기경전에 대한 검토를 통해 불교의 근본적 가르침과 깨달음 개념을 분명히 밝혔다. 이어서 이러한 초기불교의 가르침을 이어받은 대승불교의 이념과 그 이념에 따른 깨달음의 올바른 구현을 위해 오늘날 한국 불교에 필요한 것들을 정리해보았다.

The purpose of this paper is to arrange issues at ‘The debate of enlightenment’in recent korean buddhism and to discuss the direction of korean buddhism in oder to achieve enlightenment. This paper is composed of three sections. First, I arranged subjects and fundamental issues at ‘The debate of enlightenment’in recent korean buddhism. Secondly, I analysed the fundamental teachings and the concepts of enlightenment in early buddhism. Thirdly, I discussed what we need now to realize the spirit of mahayana buddhism and the buddhist enlightenment in korean buddhism.
