Fables in verse of Jean de La Fontaine are narrowly accepted as a children’s literature in Korea. While French literature is being widely translated since the late 19th century(the so-called modern enlightenment period in Korea), La Fontaine’s works were hardly introduced in Korean. According to the existing data, his fable in verse included in the anthology for educational purposes in 1930 is the first and only translation before the independence of Korea in 1945. This study therefore deals with various translations of La Fontaine’s Fables published from mid 20th century to nowadays. As a literature genre, fable is considered to be appropriate for children mainly because of its entertaining and instructive characteristics. Similary La Fontaine’s Fables in verse are accepted generally as an educative story for kids. Even though his works were originally written in verse, a considerable number of translations changed the structure to facilitate the understanding of the text. It is therefore necessary to go back to the original in French to measure how severely modified their meanings were. Additionally, several translations done by French literature specialists do not faithfully reflect the findings of modern studies. They mostly refer to the old, insufficient version of Fables as an original script. The following studies and translations need to consider the modern perspectives of many researchers so that they put into light the diversity of La Fontaine’s Fables in verse. Accordingly, it requires that we research Classicism in the French Poetry of the late 17th century and the poetics of the Fables in verse.

This article aims to reveal that Romeo and Juliet reach mutual recognition, which presupposes their individualities and their mutual understanding. Thereby they achieve a new way of love which had not been accepted in Western philosophical history. In addition, their mutual recognition started from their anti-social actions. Through their anti-social actions, Romeo and Juliet do not come to accept the ideological demands as they are; instead, they become to be independent selves. Namely, their secret love makes it possible for them to be the ones detached from the ideological demands, such as parents oppression, so they can obtain individualities that are freed from the world's demands. Obtaining individualities leads to obtaining mutual recognition about each other. Romeo says if she (Juliet) does not like the names of 'Romeo' or 'Montague', he would renounce the both, which means that what is important to them is not the perspectives of the people and the world but how they regard each other. Regarding each other in a meaningful way leads to mutual recognition. Furthermore, they want to know more about each other. Really knowing each other signifies that they come to understand each other more and they recognize each other more. They love not because they want to satisfy their fantastical lack, but their love is based upon sincerity. This signifies that their love is self-fulfilling as it is, and is not that which tries to delay the satisfaction of love, and to make the other party tantalized. Regarding each other in a meaningful way and love based on sincerity can be called love of mutual recognition.

This paper aims at researching Fabulation or The Re-education of Undine by Lynn Nottage which shows social insight with sarcastic perspectives and comic inversion in a “far less predictable” way. As a third generation of African American woman playwright, Nottage who gained prestige attached to the Pulitzer Prize award in 2009 deals with social issues by suggesting a civic character Undine and foregrounding a raised issue of the inner conflict between middle and lower class in African American community. She denies the label and the categorization of African American plays by ancestors and shows 'flexibility' and 'mobility' beyond the racial issues. In Fabulation, Nottage explores intensified stratification among the classes in African American community by introducing a dramatic rise and fall of Sharona Wilkens who changes her name to Undine Calles to achieve the top position in elite business field. Undine amplifies a new issue revolving around the growing population of upper/middle class in African American community. Nottage foregrounds the “unspoken issue” in the community by high lightening the duality of a CEO Undine as a 'top girl' in business as well as a welfare queen in Brooklyn. In the process of Undine's tumbling from top to bottom and her re-education, Nottage exposes the alienation of a African American family as well as the irrational social welfare system of the U.S. government. Fabulation signifies the future aspects of African American plays, escaping from the color-coded prison and opens a new era of African American women's theater marching to the mainstream stage regardless of sex, race, and class.

Records of drifting(漂海錄) categorized by principle agents of description are largely two types: “the drifter records his own drifting experience” and “a third person writes about other person's drifting experience.” Most existing records of drifting are writings by a third person. Since many drifters did not have enough knowledge to leave records in Chinese characters(漢文), a third person wrote down the events by listening to the drifter's account. Drifters' descriptions were gathered in various ways in the writing, and oral and written languages formed a close relation within the text to construct a discourse. This study aims to explain the writing procedure of records of drifting based on the dynamics of oral and written languages. The 2nd chapter introduced types of records of drifting and examined the general situation in the drifter's oral presentation of his story, while focusing on the relationship between the drifter and the recorder of the story. The 3rd chapter discussed the process of transcription and the recorder's role. The 4th chapter first induced three writing methods which writers of records of drifting utilized in their writings: “description via question and answer,” “sequential description of the drifter's experience,” and “specialized description on specific subjects” and demonstrated that such writing methods were closely related to the writer's intention in his record of drifting.

Travel literature has been written since ancient times, but it has not yet met the proper research, because it has been regarded as a marginal part of literature without any normative theory. However, the need to research travel literature has been increasing since the cultural turn in the nineteen eighties. The first purpose of the present paper is to review the types of travel literature and analyze their text strategies and narratologies. The process of producing travel literature from real travel experiences to a travelogue covers three phases: prefiguration of the text by personal, social, political, economical, religious, and cultural features, configuration through verbal and narrative text presentation by the narrator, and refiguration of the travel writing towards social and cultural conventions including travel literature. According to conventions of travel writing text strategies and narratologies, travel literature can be classified into four types: documentary travelogue, realistic travelogue, revisionary travelogue, and self-reflexive meta-travel fiction. Based on this review and these classifications, as its second purpose this paper brings into special focus Goethe's famous travel writing Italienische Reise, about his journey to Italy from September 1786 to June 1788. It took 41 years for Goethe to complete the work, which is composed of three books and was finally published in 1829. His numerous revisions over those decades reveal his transition from Sturm und Drang to classicism occurring alongside his personal changes and views of the world during his journey to Italy. Therefore, his Italienische Reise ought to be researched from the viewpoints of travel literature; it was transformed through the author's writing process from travel experiences into a well-considered classical work. It did not conform to the conventional forms of the genre at the time, and is more representative of the intertextual and self-reflexive meta-travel writings of the modern age.

The purpose of Japanese Literature Education is to teach students how to read, understand Japanese Literary works in Japanese and analyze them. Therefore, the basic knowledge of Japanese Literary works that students have accumulated from reading Korean Translations has a positive effect on learning them in Japanese. This is a research on what kind of Japanese Literary works N University students tend to read. It includes only Japanese novels on the best-seller list from 2004 to 2015 that Kyobo Book Centre provided. According to the list and a survey of 92 students, Mystery and Light novels are the two most popular genres of all. And the statistics show that college students ranging from freshman to senior tend to read Haruki Murakami, Kaori Ekuni, Hideo Okuda, Kyoichi Katayama, Keigo Higasino. If the textbooks for Japanese Literature courses were selected in accordance with this reading tendency, Japanese Literature Education will be conducted in a more effective way.

The subject of this study, or a short story “Rabbits”, is one of the representative short stories by a Japanese female author, Kanai Mieko, who has built up her own independent literatures in her early days. Due to the shocking materials of literature and eccentricity, this short story not only became hot topic in Japan but also got spotlight abroad through translation.  As the texts of “Rabbits” are so provocative and somewhat idealistic with its complicated structure, and the issue of narrative and fantasy factors, the short story is not only hard to interpret but also has the attractive texts which can be differently viewed in many respects. As such, the “fantasy”, which is found in the story in many different ways, can be said one critical keyword in understanding the text of “Rabbits”. In this study, the structure of the “Rabbits” would be reviewed along with the texts and the allegory and the implications in the fantasy of “Rabbits” would be analyzed. Then, the discussion would be expanded to include what kinds of implications the short story has at that time from the cultural and social perspective. In this process, the discussion would also deal with the key words such as “sexuality and love” which helps to understand the Kanai Literature. This process would show us how the expression of “sexuality” in the “girl” is cast in the frame of the fantastic work as one of the characters in the work and reborn as “Rabbits”, which is frequently seen in the early Kanai Literature, and what the “Rabbits” means in the Kanai Literature.

Kim Suk-bum's “Hwasando” is a descriptive long story that centers around the “Jeju 4-3 Incident”, where the political situation is a clash of ideologies, pro-Japanese and Northwest groups move for control, and Jeju-island's guerilla actions are confronted by those of the police and its punitive forces. This story was made on Jeju-island's indigenous sentiment and its variable culture, which is shown through the main character “Lee Bang-keun”. Lee Bang-keun's liberal ideals are one of the core philosophies that run through the entire epic. Before 1945, he was engaged in the independence movement and was eager in seeking Korea's freedom. After Korea's liberation in 1945, though, he seemed to pursue his individual freedom by immersing in his study room, appearing severed from the world. However, he was to commit suicide after murdering pro-Japanese Jung Se-yong, who had spoiled the “Jeju 4-28 Peace Agreement”, compromising his conviction that “A free man will never kill another being, and would take his own instead”. Lee Bang-keun's suicide shows that no one can be fully free from a society they belong to, no matter how much they pursue it. Desiring freedom from a society signifies their own attribution to it, and true freedom can only come when the society surrounding them allows it. Turning away from societies problems appears to have been viewed as 'cowardly', which led to Lee's suicide. Consequently, Lee Bang-keun's belief of freedom penetrates his story with the awareness that ousting pro-Japanese groups and rejecting foreign influence is needed to Jeju island's true liberation. Also, while Lee quotes doubt in the doctrinairism of Communist cultures, he questions the justice of Capitalism, where the rich is allowed to suppress the poor and how freedom earned with their labor could be considered to be true. 'Hwasando' revolves around the 'Jeju 4-3 Incident', but its main theme and ideals are set in the universal values of mankinds freedom.

In this study, some suggestions were made about how Jeju and Hainam, both of which were selected as Korean-Chinese Theme Cities for Humanities ties in 2015, could use their traditional intangible cultural heritages to strengthen the humanistic bond between them. Since the establishment of sisterhood relationship in 1995, both islands have emphasized common images―geographically long distance from the mainland, historically tragic exile, women's leadership in the cultural respect, and tourism in recent times―for twenty years. However, each of them has unique cultural identity, which seems to be rooted fundamentally in its traditional culture. This study suggested three ways of using intangible cultural heritages to strengthen a humanities ties: first, show differences in the midst of sameness to make each of them more charming; second, find out good points to utilize positively in mutual policies; and third, select feasible experiences to get nearer to people. Showing 'differences' means selecting cultural essence carefully and showing what differs, not just showing exotic scenery and customs. One of the specific methods is to maximize the advantages of each part and perform mutual benchmarking; in particular, the greatest advantage of Jeju can be that it is well equipped with museums and has long accumulated experiences of festivals related to intangible cultural inheritance. Next, focusing on realistic experiences cannot be neglected because 'experiencing' is the activity most preferred by viewers and the key point is to reach an agreement that arouses viewers' interest while maintaining the artistic level. As Jeju is very willing to become the center of East Asian exchanges, it is suggested that the island should focus on the essence of humanities through the work of complementing intangible cultural inheritance and perform exchanges from a wider perspective, instead of focusing only on the relationships with Hainan or on the inter-island bond. Although Jeju is in an economically special situation with tourist revenue forming 80% of its economy, the island needs to spend more time in working hard in search of different boastful values than those of the 'mainland', instead of being bent on utilizing intangible cultural inheritance from a narrow perspective to get immediate revenue. Both regions are expected to overcome the limitation of 'islands' and become the cultural center of Asia.

This study explores the relationship between culture and gender-relations focused on forms of capitalism. In countries appertaining to the Rhine and Anglo-Saxon models of capitalism, the female employment rate is high and gender equality indicators are elevated. On the contrary, Korea, a country pertaining to the East Asian capitalism model, has low female employment rate - below average among all OECD countries. According to previous studies, when the rate of female employment rate is high, the employment rate and level of national income per capita are high as well. It is necessary to approach the realization that female labor forces are highly qualified and capable national resources. Culture establishes the strong link between economic institutions and gender-relations, and affects the productivity of capitalism. In the era of fusion and convergence, improving economic outcomes and institutions, can push for studies on culture and gender diversity to be covered more expansively. It is getting more important to analyze how the interaction between culture and economic outcomes affects gender-relations. It is necessary to set up the model of specification and the data of culture and gender-relations in order to reinforce the theoretical background for this study. To delve deeper, one must focus on the mechanism and direct relation between gender-relations and types of capitalism to study how culture can affect economic institutions and vice versa. Furthermore, implications shall be drawn from comparisons between domestic and foreign experiences through specific case studies.
