Seasonal Distribution Characteristics of Microplastics in the Sand Beach of the Daebu Island, Gyeonggi-do

Seasonal variation in the abundance and distribution of microplastics (MPs) in beach sediments was investigated for the Daebu island, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. Beach surface sediments were sampled at five stations along the high strandline of the island beach in July and November 2013 and March 2014 to represent the summer, winter, and spring seasons, respectively. Six sizes ranging from 0.3 to 5 mm were classified and seven types of polymers were determined using FT-IR. The abundances of microplastics were 8,776-891,844 particles/ m2 in summer, 4,628-17,724 particles/m2 in winter, and 13,784-100,196 particles/m2 in spring with a predominant contribution of expanded polystyrene (EPS) of >95% in all seasons. Distinct seasonal differences were exhibited in the MPs abundance (i.e., 6-26 times higher in summer) and spatial distribution pattern (i.e., higher at northern stations in summer with southerly winds but southern stations in winter with northerly winds). On the other hand, similarities in size distribution as well as polymer composition were observed among seasons and stations. Particularly, there were good correlations between EPS of fishery-activity origin and non-EPS of inland origin. In conclusion, well-mixed currents seem to cause spatial and temporal homogeneity in size and polymer distribution, while different wind directions with seasons were likely to generate differences in the MPs abundance with time and space in the beach. However, whether the distribution characteristics of MPs on the beach sediments were determined by the direct reflection of those in flooding seawaters or by the redistribution of deposited MPs is unclear. Further study is required to identify the major mechanism.

This study was carried out to improve pretreatment methods for analyzing polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxinsdibenzofurans (PCDD/DFs) in environmental samples such as soils and sediments. The official method of using clean-up standard substances and the method of pre-packed column system analysis were applied to the environmental samples. The recovery rates of these two methods were low. In addition, wide ranges of relative standard deviations (RSD) were observed in highly-chlorinated congeners of sediment samples. In the soil samples, similar PCDD/DFs concentrations were observed for each pretreatment method. The sediment samples, however, showed larger RSDs due to complex matrices and low concentrations. An automated preparation system was also applied as a pretreatment method for analyzing PCDD/DFs in environmental samples. This system was found less affected by the proficiency of analysts than the other pretreatment methods. Besides, the automated preparation system was useful for simple/rapid clean-up, and can reduce the consumption of analysis apparatus as well as organic solvents. The automated preparation system can also be applied to monitoring and screening PCDD/DFs in environmental samples.

The accumulation levels of tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA) were investigated in samples of crucian carp and also in samples of associated sediments. Samples were collected from 15 locations along the four major rivers; the Nakdong, Han, Seomjin, and Yeongsan River. TBBPA was detected above the method detection limit from all of the sampling sites both in samples of sediment and muscle tissue of crucian carp. The TBBPA levels ranged from 0.13 to 1.4 ng/g lipid weight in the crucian carp muscle tissue samples, and from 0.090 to 1.1 ng/g dry weight in the associated sediment samples. These levels were much lower than those detected from the sites in adjacent to the point source of TBBPA or around the highly industrialized area. The accumulation levels of TBBPA distributed relatively homogeneously with very low levels, and did not show any increasing trends from the upstream sections to the downstream sections of each river. This result suggests that there may be no point sources of TBBPA along the major rivers investigated in this study.

Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has been introduced as a type of analytical equipment to determine elements on the surface of various materials. In this study, standard and sample soils were molded to make a pellet for LIBS analysis. The soils were also digested with acids for ICP analysis. Accuracies ranging between 86.5% and 119.9%, an RSD of 12.3%, an LOD of 6.09 mg/kg, and an LOQ 19.41 mg/kg resulted from the analysis of copper in soils using LIBS. Correlations (R2) of LIBS with ICP-aqua regia digestion and with ICP-total digestion analysis concentrations were over 0.96 for 28 samples. The total analytical time for the LIBS method was 385 min, which was 43.4% shorter than for the ICP-OES method (680 min). For the analysis of copper in soils, LIBS can be used for on-site detection without chemical preparation.

Mercury mass balance was investigated in Lake An-dong, located in the upper stream of the Nakdong River, to assess the status of mercury pollution by measuring mercury inputs and outputs of the lake. The parameters for mercury input estimation included atmospheric wet deposition (0.52 kg/yr), dry deposition (0.20 kg/yr), river inflow (16.93 kg/yr) and diffusion from lake sediments (0.64 kg/yr). The mercury inputs totaled 18.29 kg/yr, and 92.5% of this total input was attributed to river inflow from the upper stream. Mercury outputs were measured in evasion (0.14 kg/yr), lake outflow (1.92 kg/yr) and sedimentation (45.77 kg/yr), and the total mercury output was estimated to be 47.83 kg/yr. The imbalance between the inputs and outputs of mercury was 29.54 kg/yr, which suggests that there are other missing inputs of mercury to Lake An-dong such as river input during heavy rainfalls and tributary inflow.
