이 글은 고교-대학을 가로지르는 고전 교육의 실상 및 고교 고전 교과서 개발 현황을 점검하고, 대학 고전 교육의 방향을 탐색하려는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 2015년부터 사용하게 될 고등학교 ‘고전’ 교과서의 체계 및 구성 등을 살폈다. 그러고 나서 고등학교 고전 교육의 의의와 한계, 합 리적 핵심을 점검한 뒤, 숙명여대 사례를 중심으로 고교 교육과정과의 연 계.심화를 감안한 대학 고전 교육의 모형 및 시사점을 검토해보았다. 이 글은 고등학교의 국어과 혹은 대학에서 개별 전공의 옵션에 그쳤던 고전을 대학의 교양 교육이 수용하게 된 현실을 주목하였다. 고전을 교양 교육으로 재인식하는 것은 특정 전공 및 개별 학문에 귀속된 창조적 원천 을 학생들이 온전하게 향유할 수 있도록 되돌려 주는 것을 의미한다. 이와 같은 고전 기반 교육(Canon-Based Instruction)은 새롭게 시작할 고교 고전 교육이 실질적으로 기능할 수 있게 유도할 것이다. 아울러 대학 교양 교육 을 정상적으로 작동하는 데 기여할 것이다. 이처럼 대학 고전 교육을 교양 교육의 연계.심화의 장(場)으로 견인하고, 내실을 기하기 위해 새로운 유형의 리버럴 아트(Liberal Arts)를 상상할 필 요가 있다. 전통적 의미의 고전 교육이 아니라 실천적.융합적 사유를 담지한 새로운 유형의 리버벌 아트 개념을 본격적으로 논의해야할 시점이다.
This study was conceived by the problematic consciousness of diagnosing the paradoxical situation of classics education in high school and college and searching for the direction of classics education in college. The study first examined the system and composition of two high school “classics” textbooks, reviewed the significance, limitations, and rational core of classics education in high school, and devised a model for classics education in college based on cases. The study paid attention to the situation of liberal education embracing the classics, which used to function merely as an option for each major in high school and college. A new understanding of the classics as part of liberal education is to help the students enjoy the academic and creative sources reverted to certain majors and individual study through liberal arts and thus make them the exclusive property of the students rather than the majors. Imagination about a new type of liberal arts is needed when making classics education a venue for intensifying and linking with the basic liberaleducation and searching for plans for practical and inclusive substantialization. In such a case, the activation of classics education and basic liberal education in college will naturally provide the driving force to move forward the plans to reinforce the elements of high school humanities. It is time to discuss the concept of such a new type of liberal arts in full scale.
