이 글은 공공 활동에의 참여가 동감 능력의 향상에 어떤 역할을 하는지를 분석하고 있다. 오늘날과 같은 다원주의 사회에서 동감은 시민 주체에게 요구되는 중요한 미덕이다. 최근 현대 사회가 직면하고 있는 중요한 시대적 과제의 하나로 동감 능력의 향상이 지적되는 것도 이런 이유에서이다. 이를 위해 이 연구에서는 동감을 타자와의 구분, 타자의 이해, 타자와 연대성으로 구분하고, 공공 활동이 각각의 동감 요소에 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는지를 분석하고 있다. 연구 대상은 숙명여자대학교 ‘사회변동과 사회운동’ 과목 수강생들이다. 수강생들은 한 학기 동안 다양한 공공 활동에 참여하였고, 연구자는 이들의 경험에 대한 설문조사와 참여관찰, 그리고 인터뷰를 바탕으로 연구를 진행하였다. 조사 결과를 정리하자면, 첫째, 공공 활동에의 참여는 참여자들로 하여금 차이에 대한 인식과 타자에 대한 동감을 형성하는데 긍정적인 역할을 하고 있다. 둘째, 공공 활동에의 참여는 참여 대상에 대한 동감을 넘어서 전체 사회에 대한 적극적인 관심을 끌어낼 뿐 아니라, 타자의 관점에서 자신을 객관화함으로써 자신의 정체성이 확장되는 경험을 할 수 있도록 한다. 셋째, 그럼에도 불구하고, 타자와의 연대성 형성을 통한 사회적 실천의 단계까지는 이르지 못하고 있다. 이상의 결과들은 한국 사회의 시민 주체 형성이라는 과제와 관련하여, 이론적이고 실천적인 다양한 함의를 던져주고 있다.

This paper examines the role of public activity participation in enhancing one’s sympathy for another. In today’s pluralistic community, sympathy is considered to be an important virtue required within a society. This explains why it remains for the current society to better improve sympathetic ability. Thus, this paper categorizes sympathy into the classification of the other, knowledge of the other and solidarity with the other, and discusses how each sympathetic element is affected by public activities. The participants in this study are students who took the course “Social Change and Social Movement” at Sookmyung Women’s University. Throughout the semester, participants were involved in diverse public activities leading to extractions of surveys, personal observations and interviews which served as the foundation for the study. The paper proposes three main points: firstly, public activity participation plays a positive role for the participants to expand their sympathetic area reaching to the others. Secondly, participants’ cognitive sympathy through public involvement not only brings out one``s concerns to the others but also enables participants to objectify themselves to experience anexpansion of their identities. Lastly and nevertheless, social practice through the solidarity formation with the others, which serves as the last stage of sympathy, is hardly reached. The following observations provide diverse theoretical and practical implications regarding the tasks of citizen-subjects formation.
