This thesis is focused to examine the way how Yeom Sang Seop``s narrative desire to revive national identity in Until Peonies Blossom is revealed in the dialectic relation between a cognitive structure and a emotive structure of text. Issues discussed in this thesis can be summarized as follows. First, Until Peonies Blossom is the work which has a narrative intention to want to criticize life of the unstable colonial modern which is dominated by money through vulgar narrative that revolves around the young men and young women of passion and marriage at the level of cognitive structure. Although the vulgar narrative form of good and evil, based on ethical dichotomy, is overwhelming such an intention, the originality of the narrative project in Until Peonies Blossom is to criticize the unstable social conditions and customs of colonial modernity which has been consistently problematization by novels of Yom Sangseop in colonial period. Second, Until Peonies Blossom is showing a narrative desire to a national identity at the level of emotive structure through otherizing Mooja as a representation of Americanism, who is the ‘modern-girl’, and Sinseoong as a representation of Orientalism. This Until Peonies Blossomhas’ narrative desire, however, is paradoxical because it corresponds with the imperialist desire to estrange female bodies.
