본 논문은 수사학에서 거론하는 에토스와 파토스를 중심으로 법륜 스님의 <즉문즉 설>에 나타난 수사학적 설득 요인을 살펴보았다. 사람의 성품이나 인격을 의미하는 에토 스는 두 가지 의미로 수사학적 접근이 가능하다. 하나는 말하는 사람이 가지고 있는 인격 과 도덕성 그 자체를 의미할 수 있고, 다른 하나는 이와는 무관하게 청중에게 신뢰받을 인품이 드러나도록 말로 설득하는 것을 의미할 수 있다. 법륜이 종교지도자이자 사회운 동가, 환경운동가로서 펼쳐 온 범종교적 사회활동은 “훌륭한 삶의 방식으로서의 에토스” 를 충족시킨다. 뿐만 아니라 “즉설”에서 언술로 보여준 법륜의 수사학적 전략은 그를 “믿 을 만한 사람”으로 보이게 하는 에토스의 진정성도 확보한다. 청중의 감정적 변화를 불러일으키는 설득 방법인 파토스는 법륜이 청중들에게 주는 독특한 긴장과 이완의 감정에서 완성되고 있다. <즉문즉설>에서 법륜이 청중들로부터 호의적인 반응을 얻는 것은 감정이입이나 동감 혹은 긍정의 방식이 아니라 “부정”과 “꾸짖 음”이 주는 긴장에서 시작된다. 그리고 그 긴장을 이완시키는 “유머”가 있기에 가능하다. 그의 유머는 청중이 예측하는 종교인에 대한 성스러움이나 엄숙함의 기대치를 깨는 엉뚱 함과 반전에서 극대화된다. 청중들은 “즉문”과 “즉설”에서 반복되는 질책의 긴장과 유머의 이완 속에서 마음의 고민과 고통으로부터 해방되는 것이다. 법륜이 <즉문즉설>에서 청중을 설득하고자 하는 궁극적 목적은 청중들의 모든 번뇌 와 고민이 헛된 욕망에서 비롯되고 있음을 깨닫고 스스로 행복한 삶을 모색하게 하기 위한 것으로 보인다. 이는 오래 전 붓다가 중생을 교화시키기 위한 설법(說法)과 매우 닮아있다.

This paper explores the modes of persuasion in Monk Beopryun`s prompt Q & A in the perspective of ethos and pathos. Ethos, which refers to a speaker`s virtue or personality, can be approached in two rhetorical ways. Ethos can mean the speaker`s own respectable personality or morality. Ethos can also mean the speaker`s persuasive speech skill in gaining credibility from his audience. Monk Beopryun has established ethos through his admirable way of life involved in social activities (such as civil rights movement, environmental movement and unification movement.) His rhetorical strategies in his prompt answers convince his audience to secure his ethos. Pathos is another mode of persuasion, which is related to the audience`s emotional change. Bomnyun accomplishes pathos through his unique tensionrelaxation technique. In his prompt Q & A, Bomnyun wins the favorable responses from his audience by creating tension with his denial and scolding rather than his acknowledgement or empathy. This tension becomes afterwards loosened through his great sense of humor. The effect of his humor reaches the climax when his audience feel that his witty remarks are absolutely beyond their expectations to a religious person who is supposed to give holy and solemn lessons. Listening to Bomnyun`s repetitive scolding and humor, his audience feel freed from their agonies. The ultimate aim of Monk Beopryun`s answers through ethos and pathos is to help his audience realize that their agonies and sufferings are caused by the vanity of human ambition and, as a result, help them lead their lives in happiness. Monk Beopryun `s prompt Q & A has brought Buddhist theories out of cloistered temple into the ordinary people`s life. This practice seems to be in line with Mahayana Buddhism. It is also similar to the Buddha`s preaching.
