One of the most important debates in contemporary epistemology is the debate between foundationalism vs coherentism. What is, then, the central issue between foundationalism and coherentism? It is whether a species of justification that is immediate, basic, or foundational. J. Pryor and A. Goldman, and others hold that there is immediate justification. Among others, J. Pryor have developed impressive arguments that there is immediate justification in recent times. According to him, the best argument in its support is not the infinite regress argument, according to which unacceptable alternatives lend support to the conclusion that there must be immediate justification. He uses two strategies to establish the conclusion that such justification exists. First, he argues that the best way to defend the existence of immediate justification is to cite examples of such beliefs, such as “I am tired” or “I have a headache.” Secondly, he provides support immediate justification by criticizing what he calls “Master Argument for Coherentism.” And he concludes that there is immediate justification. This paper first considers reasons why the infinite regress argument is not able to be best way to defend foundationalism. And then, I explain Pryor`s two strategies, positive and negative, to establish the view that there must be immediate justification. Finally, I examine principles to which a view like Pryor`s is committed. Each of these principles is, by itself, highly plausible, but they are inconsistent each other.
